Is this quality loss a thing with the German originals, or just the (English I'm assuming) translations?

I haven't read any of the translations, just the first 4 or 5 books of the original.
But imo it's true, that, albeit still being interesting (and increasingly disturbing - at least the last one I read gave me goosebumps), the later books aren't as good as the first one. Something is missing, but I can't quite put my finger on it :/

I really need to reread them and complete my collection.
(My mom and I used to collect them together, but eventually lost track at some point)
