Because he is brave enough to subvert traditional gender roles even in such a small, traditional community like Bluebell. He doesn't try to hide his true self - just look at this man rock the red lipstick like there's no tomorrow - even if he gets called weird for that. And most of all, he tries his hardest to be the best father for Laney he can be.

That's a good answer. I know lots of people love Howard because he acts like a mockery towards the gay community (not stating my opinions, just opinions I've heard of) but you have a legit answer.
