Me too. :( Same with fic: "Oh, I did this in one sitting, sorry it didn't come out very good!" And it's like 10000 words long in a multi-chaptered epic that was moving me to tears.

On the other hand, I've done some really not so good drawings that people say are "look so cool/pretty!" just because I drew in the shadows. o_o

I guess that you are your very own worst judge.

I don't draw; I only look at art. But it seems like the vast majority of the time the artist has to say "This sucks; this looks like shit; I can't believe how bad this came out." The thing could be way better than lots of professionally sold art and the artist will still go on about how horrible it is and they can't even stand to look at it anymore. Yet I've talked to some artists and they sincerely like the work of other people and aren't nearly as hard on it as on their own stuff.

I think it's because, when one draws something, one is seeing every flaw, every single line and bit that didn't come out like one wanted and was picturing it in their mind, but only the artist ever sees that process, anyone else seeing the picture won't notice all those "what could have been and wasn't" that the artist can't unsee.

That actually makes a ton of sense.

Keep in mind, maybe it took them five minutes now but it probably took them years of practice to get to the point where they can sketch something out in 5 minutes.

When they say 'lolz it's bad' they're only comparing it to their other work and what they know they can do with more effort.

(Thought it's probably not that bad if they choose to post it online in the first place.)

Idk if that helps or makes things worse.

Why is this secret so small?

TB2

(Anonymous) 2011-12-14 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I am genuinely interested in finding out what this secret actually says.

Tiny, blue, blurry font? It must contain the secrets of the universe!

Re: TB2

[identity profile] rtydmartel.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
It looks find to me. I think it's a problem with that website, the "suddenly tiny for some, regular size for others" thing has happened before.

Anyway, it has a picture of a man being all cocky and stuff, and the blue text says:

"Ever since he started livestreaming, I've come to realize
what a sweet, charming, caring and innocent person he
is. He's exactly the kind of guy I want to be with... I think
I've legitimately fallen in love with him.

[Man in a cool pose]

"S!B: WTH Anon. He doesn't know who you are, for
one, and even if he did he's probably straight anyway."

I don't think you get what it means to be an artist, OP. I may draw something that, at first looks amazing to me, but then...5 minutes later I really don't like it. But I still post cause I know there are people who'd probably like it. I usually redraw it better later, if I feel inclined to do so.

Plus, a lot of it just comes from the fact that we're harsh judges on ourselves. And like a poster here already said, it's also due to the fact that many of us CAN do something that's much better than what we just did in 5 minutes and yes, that 5 minute sketch can suck badly by comparison.

I can understand the incredulous feelings you get at seeing something looks good, but is judged harshly by the poster, but at the same time, I know exactly where they're coming from.

[identity profile] badass-tiger.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, but that doesn't mean they have to put 'omg this sucks' along with their post. It makes them sound whiny and attention-seeking. They could just say something like 'I don't think this came out great, so I really want to know what everyone else thinks'. That sounds much nicer, and is essentially saying the same thing

Re: NF

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
True. And I've done that before. I've also put the "this sucks. oh well" before. *shrug* It's whatever mood I'm in really. Usually the "this sucks" one comes from after I've fought with it and it's just NOT coming out right, but I don't wanna waste it, so...yeah.

NS2

I honestly don't understand why people like him... he seems to have a pretty sizable fanbase :/

Re: NS2

[identity profile] niesse.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Because he's adorable, especially when he sadfaces, and before he went on his murderspree his failtastic love life was just funny, so you could forget how horrible he was about it.
Also, this panel: http://mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=004365

I'm not a fan of him, for the record, but I can see why some people are.

A large chunk of that is because of Be The Seadweller Lowblood.

I don't blame you a bit. I don't even know as much about him as you do but I think he is utterly charming and I would do him in a heartbeat.

(I'm a chick, but that really doesn't give me any chance either. Though I am OK with that.)

NF

[identity profile] alloysius.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not an amazing artist but I've said similar things about my pics. Never 'lol dis sux' but I have admitted no liking pics and still posting and I have honestly told how long t took me to draw it.

I do this because although I'm not a hugely popular artist I do have some followers and people who comment and I feel that I owe it them to try and be consistent when it comes to quality and owe them an explanation when I fail to meet my own standards, as retarded as that sounds.

I dislike the "oh this sucks" in general on principle. If you honestly think it sucks, don't post it. If you post it, be confident. You don't have to gush or lie, but just keep it to yourself. Most of the time "sorry this sucks" comes off as a really insecure person being terrified that somebody might criticize their work, because I guess then they'll lose face because they thought it was good but the commenter didn't? Like it's just an elaborate "in b4 all negative comments."
I'm usually tempted to apologize for whatever I post, but I just ignore that impulse. It's just a safety blanket. There are times when humorous self-deprecation is totally appropriate and fine, but most of the time when I see it in an author's note or artist comment it just comes off badly.

I'm pretty sure there's some Gino/Kallen stuff on [livejournal.com profile] cgkinkmemeii. In my mind it's something of a pair-the-spares as well, but I do think there was some honest ship-tease stuff there near the end of the series.
