Not only that, but heckling the audience is an old tradition in stand up, especially with black comedians (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pS5UguvVVqM). I can see how it would be humiliating to a lot of people though, and I haven't seen this movie since it came out so I think I remember this comedian being super mean-spirited about it, but you're supposed to take it in stride, IDK.

It doesn't help that the whole time I'm just thinking "but Eddie Murphy isn't actually fat". Maybe if they had done this movie with an actual large actor this scene would've been sad, but I couldn't suspend my disbelief I guess

Except an actual large actor can't just take their weight off and on like a fat suit so most of the film wouldn't have been possible?

I think the point was that it started ok and the prof didn't mind the first few jokes, but the comedian just kept going on and on... way more than any of the other audience members and it became really nasty.

I've been heckled before at a comedy club and I laughed because the jokes were funny, but they also hit a real sore point so I did die a bit inside.

IA. It's not the jokes themselves that make the scene sad. It's the fact that Reggie continues the jokes even when it's obvious Sherman had had enough. At that point, Reggie was no longer joking. He had found an easy target and continued the jokes to the point where it humiliated Sherman in front of his date and in front of everyone else. As someone who has been singled out and laughed at by large groups of people before, that scene really struck a chord for me.

Not to mention, Sherman didn't know it was a place that heckled the audience. He only knew that it was a place that his students enjoyed going to.
