I know this isn't exactly what you're talking about but -- I have always wanted to write Jane Austen fic because I love Jane Austen but I'm terrified to actually try it. Not because I can't write like Jane Austen, which is a given, but because I could fail in so many other ways.

I feel you, OP. Quite frankly, I admire anyone who writes historical fic and actually puts in the research for it. As someone who's done one (successful) historical fic and is trying (and currently failing) to do another for a completely different time period, I have a ton of respect for those people who take the time to research all those little things that may seem unimportant but can completely ruin the setting if they're wrong.

I tried writing in the Victorian era for an original piece and while I felt I was doing all right, there was still a vast amount of research left to be done. There were so many movements during that time that I knew if I didn't mention at least the majority of them I'd be failing hardcore. I also felt kind of weird writing it in England since I'm American. I should probably just try again, but set it in America. It's not like it wasn't populated then!

I know the guy on the right is dead, I think the guy on left is alive though.

A+
This is what I thought, exactly.

Goodness, yes. There's so much stuff that makes up a historical period than just pretty outfits and name-dropping Napoleon, as I've discovered... my respect for Patrick O'Brian has skyrocketed ever since I started really thinking about the volume of knowledge that goes into writing even a single chapter of one of his books.

It's even worse when I look back on my dragons 'n' zombies story loosely set in the Regency period, but with women's rights and airships. It sounds awesome, but it was not.

I've decided to (maybe) write a story about lady pirates. I think it'll be easier than a strictly historical fiction, but still difficult because I want to get everything historically correct, but featuring entirely original characters instead of trying to capture everything about a real person who actually existed.

OMG BOSIE!

I thought he was adorable. Truly Oscar Wilde's 'Golden Boy'. The older version of him turned all het and anti-gay, but he looked a little like Jason Isaacs in him 60s.

Keep doing research! I didn't think I could/wanted to write historical fic or AUs or whatever at all, and this year I ended up writing this '20s-British-schoolboys thing and the background research was so much fun. And it made the writing more fun. So hopefully it'll help.
