Instead of just sharing this here, I really think you should share this with the author! Even anonymously. Embarking on the creation of your own work, rather than fanwork, can be really scary and it's easy to get discouraged. Especially since it's so much harder to get recognition outside of fandom.

I have a lot of respect for the fact that you would follow this person's work outside of fandom. There are a lot of people out there who don't see fanwork for what it is: blood, sweat and tears on the behalf of creators. It's as if an artist/writer is suddenly invalid if they don't create the right kind of work anymore.

I am so curious: which fandom is this?

Agree with the person above. Tell this to the author. It can inspire her.

Is it weird I think this secret is about me? Was part of fandom, left to work on my book, had a unique view of the characters. Please, anon, which fandom? O_O

OP

That is true. It also might make her feel like she owes something to fandom and should write fics instead of the book. I just want her to do what makes her happy. I also don't really want to say this to her face because I don't think that I could say it right. I don't want to sound like a crazy fangirl who's just sucking up to her. I really, truly appreciate her writing and want her to continue it in whatever form.

The comments make me think that this might also inspire writers who are not her. How would they react to being told it's not them? I don't want to disappoint them because there may be someone who thinks the same about them, even though it was not the OP of this secret. I don't want them to lose faith in their writing just because this secret was not about them.

I really don't know if I should tell the fandom or not. But.

There is nothing in your comment that says to me that it could not be you, but there is something that says that it might be. So, I will ask you this: Do the colours of the secret mean anything to you? If they do, it probably is you. (I was going to use purple originally because I thought that orange was too telling, but it felt so wrong that I had to change it)

I feel the same way about an author - or rather, about a pair of writers who work together. I just want them to continue writing forever and publish their own book so I can read more gorgeous writing instead of just rereading all the old.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh come on, now you have to tell us who it is.
I can think of at least three fanfic-writers off the top of my head who have gone on to try and write books. Am curious now~

...okay so I have the sneakiest feeling that I know exactly who you're talking about and feel the same way O_o Only [1] it could be a coincidence--this probably isn't unusual in small fandoms with writers who're good enough to publish, and [2] I'd worry that I was pressuring/guilting the writer in question if I mentioned her by name because she watches this comm :/

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I get that. I'm the writer in this case. I feel bad for neglecting my fanworks and then I when I write fan stuff I feel bad about neglecting my original work.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
^^; I'm a writer that's not really writing fandom stuff and trying to focus on my stuff getting published, too. Tell your the writer, maybe they'll sneak in a fic or two for you. Sometimes it's relaxing to write something that isn't fandom related.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, I know the above ones are like 'tell her and maybe she'll write for you!" but seriously? Don't. Don't pressure someone into coming back to a fandom when they're trying to move on with their lives and follow their dreams. Writing books is fucking hard, respect her for that and let her try. This isn't about you.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the OP wants the writer to write more fics. She said she misses the writer's style more than the characters/fics. That being said, showing encouragement for what the writer is doing can be a wonderful gift especially since, as you said, writing books are fucking hard. And God knows every writer need a little boost every now and then! (a little - too much pushing can drive them crazy.)

OP, how close were you and the writer in fandom? Do you think she would be happy getting a note from you? Maybe she has an author blog and is willing to share it - after all, this would mean that once her book is published, she can guarantee that you will be eagerly buying it, and since you are such a fan, your words of praise can serve as marketing for her book.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But, uh, that's not what the OP was saying. OP said that they would gladly follow the writer to any fandom, and that were awaiting the publishing of her book just so OP could read her writing again.

OP also said that they missed her writing more than they missed the characters.
