Well, it was the actors doing the PSA, not the characters, and I don't think that the actors ruined anything. At least you realize you're being an ass about it.

Just keep in mind that while you might find the show questionable there are a lot of people who love it and will take something they say seriously. :]

Also, I did not know this campaign existed but I'm happy it does.

This! Glee is extremely popular with tweens/young teens, and including actors from Glee is a great way to encourage those impressionable minds to actually listen to and consider the message of this campaign. You may not like the show, but how can you not like the show's popularity being used for a good cause?

[identity profile] nicheledres.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree, Anon! In fact, I came here to say exactly that.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't know this campaign existed, and good for the actors for being involved.

My mom (a SOVA board member) and I get super excited every time Becky or Sue's sister shows up. Even in the show, Sue makes a huge point of not treating people with intellectual difficulties as any different or less than anyone else. It makes a really outstanding point that this asshole character can have so much compassion for other people, even if it's only for people with a certain disability. Also, she turned around in the last episode iirc and started helping the homeless because she could no longer help her sister.

I don't really enjoy Glee anymore, but I've always happily watched any scene Becky's in. It's just so wonderful that Glee makes intellectual difficulties such a blatant point.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
really? you can't just be glad that they're using an actor who actually has a disability to make the psa? because i think that's pretty cool.

...setting aside the fact that's suppose to be two actors, not the characters, how are either of those characters ~special snowflakes~ anyway?

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2011-12-18 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Becky is the the character least treated like a special snowflake. Everyone else has been woobied despite their terrible characters except Becky. She's treated like everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS.
Becky is possibly the best character on the show. :)

ANd I'm quite excited they're giving her a sex plotline on the show.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
PSAs that use famous people to try and push their message are retarded.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the expression ~special snowflakes so fucking much.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that expression is so retarded.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
i see what you did there

I don't watch Glee but i love the actor that plays the coach - she rocks so hard. Now i need to go find this PSA on Youtube.

ETA - excellent PSA but omfg. Do not read the comments. Jayzus.

I know I'm going to get hate for this but I hate PSAs about "stomping out" certain words. The word "retard" isn't even used in reference to actually mentally handicapped individuals 99% of the time it's used now. We've got more important shit to worry about.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I agree utterly.

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of "Glee" but hell, using a character with disabilities as someone in charge and using them in a PSA? Hell yeah! I'm from Poland and a fuckload of people call each other "down" (as in you idiot) and it's disgusting. I don't care about the legitimate use of "retarded", if not in context DON'T FUCKING USE IT! My mum used to be a baby-sitter of a boy with Down's Syndrome and we were friends, so I'll blow up and kick anyone's arse at any given time.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
You make a fair point--I am all for speaking out against bullying & whatnot and using a popular show to do it makes sense, but since the show has REALLY mixed/bad messages about that kind of stuff, it just bugs me sometimes. (Plus, remember when this show was a snarky satire? It takes itself SO seriously now and it's kind of ridiculously indulgent and embarrassing a lot of the time.) Anything that gets that kind of message out is a good thing, but...maybe the writing on the show should also try not being offensive, sometimes, just maybe.

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
Becky has never been a "bad message" in Glee.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
She herself, no, but what about when Sue kicked her off the Cheerios when Jean died because she "reminded her of [Jean]"? Like...because...they're all the same? Um. And there are a lot of really fucked-up messages about bullying in general, IMO--one second it's a joke and the next it's very serious business and meant to be taken as such. It's infuriating sometimes.
