because I know fandoms with little-to-none canon female characters tend to be very slash-heavy

I've yet to see any current fandom that isn't slash-heavy. If there are two male characters and two female characters, there's going to be more slash fic/art/whatever than there will be het.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
..Slash fans write a lot?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

From what I've seen, Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't predominantly slashy, but that might be the places I lurk in for that fandom.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, fellow A:TLA fan. Where do you lurk?

The most slash you'll find? Probably Zuko/Aang, Zuko/Sokka, Zuko/Jet, and Azula/Ty Lee (which is the most popular Azula pairing overall). But a lot of the fanfic for that last one is crap because Azula tends to be written very poorly.

Overall, not much slash to be found, which I happen to find unfortunate.

Hello there. :)

I lurk mostly on ff.net and a few places on LJ (bouncing from people's personal journals based on fic recs and such). When looking for shippy stuff, I only really like Jet/Zuko because it's almost always angsty as fuck, which is just the way I like things, but Zuko-centric things tend to have him paired off with Katara, which is a ship I can't stand (the fans don't help).

And I have to agree with you whole-heartedly on the Azula/Ty Lee thing. So much horrible fic for such a lovely ship. :( At least some of the art for it is good.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
:)

I hope you've been able to find some Jet/Zuko fic to your liking! FF.net is a total crapshoot: on one hand, you have the ability to narrow the stories down to two characters, effectively (for the most part) filtering the pairings you want to see. On the other hand... well, having lurked there, I'm sure you know the quality of most stories.

I hear you on Zutara. I never cared for the pairing myself, and the overzealous fans... really don't help their own cause. That said, one of my closest friends is a Zutarian (a very sane one), and she feels she can't even participate because of the fanbase. No one should be made to feel like that because a vocal minority shoots their mouth off and makes everyone look bad.

Isn't it a shame? That bad writing has actually turned me off to the pairing. I don't like it nearly as much as I once did. I just... can't get very excited over it anymore. Even some of the fanart is off-putting. But what's good is usually very good, when characterization is actually kept in mind.

Doctor Who fandom is largely het. There's some slash, but not as much, in my experience.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Borgias, any version. Most popular pairing is Lucrezia/Cesare.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse series. Het is by far the most popular.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. I tried to find some Sam/Bill, Eric/Lafayette, Bill/Alcide, Eric/guy and I think I found about five for all of the above. Oh well.

Anyway, it makes sense - Sook being the main character and all.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Eric/Godric was/is semi popular. ffnet has a a decent amount of it (can't vouch for the quality) and there's this comm: http://godriceric.livejournal.com/profile

hunger games? I've seen some Cinna slash around, but the fandom seems het heavy for the most part (I might be missing something though, idk)

Percy Jackson

rionaleonhart: the mentalist: lisbon, with time counting down, makes an important call. (it's been an honour)

[personal profile] rionaleonhart 2011-12-17 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The Mentalist is another example of a predominantly het fandom. The main character (who is male) is constantly on low-level flirtation mode with the entire rest of the main cast (two male, two female), so lack of fodder certainly isn't a reason; the het pairings just happen to appeal to writers in that fandom more.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Bones (there's some femslash and a bit of m/m, but it's mostly het)

Castle

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Twilight. Slash is nonexistent.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
well I wouldn't quite say that, since http://twilight-slash.livejournal.com/profile and some it's slashy affiliates have a decent number of fics, but I agree that there is far more het.

It seems like it's strongly one way or another. Some fandoms, totally slash. Others, totally het.

Weirdly, this tends to work in my favor. I have two OTPs in two fandoms, one slash and the other het, and they're the most popular pairings in those fandoms.

Community fandom leans more towards het, particularly Jeff/Annie, though there is still a lot of Troy/Abed fic.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-17 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The Vampire Diaries is very het-heavy.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of procedurals either have more het stuff or at least very even. Probably because there's always some really popular male/female dynamic that the writers start to shove at everyone.

GOING OFF FF.NET (not an accurate source but it is very convenient to search Char1/Char2 (plus Romance genre) to find the pair's fic), you have a fair few current fandoms that are predominantly het. I think a lot of the time it's either the two male leads are TOTAL BUDDIES and shipping them is like "dude let them be friends" or it's a male + female lead.
Castle
Bones
Fringe
NCIS: LA
CSI: NY (pretty sure on this one since they have a canon het couple + Stella/Mac)
The Mentalist
Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (CM itself has like vast quantities of everything)
IDK about NCIS and CSI, I don't travel into their fandoms.
Also ST: Enterprise has a lot of het, slash too but a lot of het

So yeah, American procedurals are usually heavy on the het couples. Not to say there isn't slash, but it's not as prominent as the show's main het couple or two.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I want to say NCIS is pretty balanced, but honestly it's been about a year since I've been in the fandom so I'm not sure if it's shifted since.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
It depends. Some places you can find decent het/faimlyfic/bro-bonding if that's what you're into, other places it's Tony/Gibbs, Tony/Tim, Tony/Gibbs, Tony/Gibbs etc. etc. etc.

So, yeah. :/

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Mass Effect fandom is pretty het-heavy. Dragon Age fandom is about half and half. Persona 3 fandom had a het explosion after the remake with the female PC option came out. Xenosaga.

Games with female protags (or the option to make one female) have a loooot more het.
