It's actually a better idea to be more discerning of who to trust and open yourself up to, then to close off to everyone ever.

Just be polite, and keep everyone in acquaintance level, and the true friends start popping up by themselves.
If it helps any, I realize that instincts are the first impulse you get, and that if you try to think about it you distort that impulse and end up forgetting what it really was about. It's okay to be cautious -recommended, even- but if you second thing every hit of inspiration and instinct that you receive, they become useless.
