Martha was a med student and Rory was a nurse, so an alternative plan is clearly to go into the health professions

This.

Or teaching. Or an airline stewardess. Or journalism. He doesn't seem avert to those.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He seems to like military men, too... (-:

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
He loves having soldiers, navy men, 'savage girls' and burly highlanders around to protect him. ^_^

Also orphans.

Word.

The Rose had a job. The Doctor ruined it LOL. Donna also went after her aspirations but refused to compromise herself to fit into what people wanted from her. I'm not too sure what's up with Amy. They never really mention what happened after schooling or how she ended up in the job she did.

But the point is that most of the Doctor's companions went after what they wanted, if they knew what that was. They didn't shy away from their desires out of some hope of being saved. You shouldn't either.

Is it that he picks them or they pick him? Presumably the less you've got going on/the less you feel responsible for taking care of at home the more likely you're going to be to jump at the offer to leave everything behind. I'm not sure never making ties in the hopes that someone will come offer you time and space travel is a great idea.

No, he doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
sounds like you're just pulling stuff out of your ass to justify your laziness/lack of ambition

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
At least in NuWho, the companions are all pretty well tied in some fashion - Rose had her mother and Mickey, Martha had her parents and her siblings, Donna had her mother and Wilf, and Amy has Rory. They have something that ties them back to their mundane life, that keeps them grounded, which in turn allows them to ground him. And they all had jobs prior to the Doctor. Rose's got blown up when she met him, but Martha was a med student working at a hospital and Donna, of course, was the best temp in Cheswick. I'm not sure they ever definitively said Amy was working prior to the Doctor, but she got tired of waiting and became a model or spokesperson or something.

TL;DR, the ties are important still for companions. Don't ignore them in the hopes that a madman with a box will crash in the backyard.

Prior to the Doctor, Amy was a kissogram, hence her sexy policewoman outfit in her first appearance.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember that, but I thought there was some dialogue that pointed towards it being something that she was doing specifically for Rory, not necessarily her job at the time.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
She said 'I go to parties and... kiss people' to the Doctor in The Eleventh Hour, so I think it was at least a part-time job.

[identity profile] caladria.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
As well as Martha, who you missed off the picture because she was a med student, he's also had teachers (Ian and Barbara), astrophysicists (Zoe), Navy/UNIT (Ben, Jo, Liz, Harry).

He'd have you back before morning anyway, OP, he's got a time machine!

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but still, even time travel, he always seems to arrive late. Remember how he brought Rose home twelve MONTHS later? And didn't Martha wind up not getting back for two weeks? The Doctor's not exactly known for getting people back on time.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
So did your forget about Martha or is being a doctor not a good career?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It may seem ostensibly like you're holding yourself off because you're ~waiting for the Doctor, but this sounds very much like a real desire not to put down roots because you want to be free to pick up and go somewhere else or do something else at any time, which is not too unusual. I have the same issues - I flit from menial job to menial job because living like that lets me travel more easily and makes it easier for me to change my mind about the direction of my life because I rarely commit to anything big. But I did reach a point when I realized that I'd like something more stable and that choosing one direction won't prohibit me from changing my mind, or picking up and going somewhere else if I chose so later, and maybe you'll get to that point too if you find a direction, education and/or career-wise - that calls to you more than the desire not to be tied down.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I seem to recall that he rather doesn't care whether his companions have jobs/family ties/etc. He's always of the optimistic opinion he can get them back in time for their wedding/job/whatever it is they need to be doing. Either that or their workplaces/their families/their planets end up being distroyed just as he shows up. Plus, he's not above a little kidnapping now and then.

The point is that he's not looking for people who have put their lives on hold waiting for something to happen. He happens by and their lives get massively derailed pretty much every single time.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not pretty. The Doctor usually doesn't have ugly or fat companions. I don't know if I'd get any fun TARDIS time... unless.. I was an expanded Universe companion...

(It's funny a friend of mine and I had a joke that he was incarnation of the Doctor and I was past companion. We'd go on about adventures we'd had... half thought up things like a evil miniature gold course etc.)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kinda shocked that no one told you this in this thread before me, but, OP, he's kind of... not real. Yeah. The TARDIS doesn't exist, and so doesn't the Doctor. You're never going to be a companion, not because of your "ties" but because none of this will ever exist. Stop excusing your laziness and lack of ambition with something that will obviously never happen, because you're gonna waste your life up waiting for some fictional character to appear in your backyard and that's kind of insane. Put your shit together, study, work, get a career, get out of your mom's basement and stop taking fictional crap so seriously. Start worrying about real life and the real people you're gonna meet in the moment you stop with such a ridiculous excuse.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
You seem like an idiot. And an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
idk, the way they went about it was a little too blunt and rude but they have a point...

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I seem like a person who won't bullshit OP. You may think it's cute for people to say "nice words" in this secret, as in "Martha was a-whatever-worker" or "The Doctor doesn't cares about that!", but this is just crap. This is not real help. People who support this kind of excuse for laziness are just helping OP to be more trapped into an unreal expectation of their future.

I may be an asshole, an idiot, or a jerk who's way too rude for yours or OP's taste, but some people just need a good reality check.

And I stand for what I said: Doctor Who is not real. The Doctor is just a character and he'll never appear to get you because he doesn't exists. Instead of waiting for something that will never happen, work hard, study, get connected with people and be a good companion for real people.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 05:09 am (UTC)(link)

You seem like someone who is desperately hiding from reality. When a fictional character is inspiring you to make bad life choices, shit has to stop.
