I agree, I think he's the most normal out of the kids... I mean, he cusses, he watches shitty movies, he evidently knows what furries are, he plays video games. He's a normal 13 year old who just can be slightly derpy!

Agreed. I see a ton of fic and art where John is portrayed as some blushing little doll.

Even though he's just canonically oblivious, tactless, and a mouthy little brat that keeps failing into sexually-charged statements. I think some fans forget he's still a 13-year old boy because. That and juxtapose to Dave, everyone seems a touch softer in comparison.

Well he's definitely pretty adorable here, but I had figured that John's playfulness was played up and his sass played down in that whole update as way to get at the readers, because while he's chipper we're sad for him knowing that he's being led to see his Dad's corpse. Like if he had gotten really upset about those dead carapace people and stayed that way, it might not have had nearly as much emotional whiplash and impact for us when he got up there.

If nothing else, John is not innocent. And frankly, John is not a character who breaks. Recall how he reacted to his own goddamn father dying. A moment of horrified shock, an impulse toward vengeance which got him horribly gored, then after that... what? Zero reaction? He basically got on with his life. There's nothing to indicate that he's a "breakable" character at all. Very few characters in Homestuck actually are! Hell, the only one among the main kids I'd consider "breakable" is Rose, who we actually did see break and go grimdark (even though nobody in fandom treats her as such).

Homestuck fandom in general really likes to underrate the characters' competence at coping and overplay their emotional reactions to shit.

Honestly, reading the responses here, "innocent" was probably the wrong word to use. I don't think he's a kawaii moeblob. He really is one of the most resilient characters in the comic. There's just... something about him.

I'd disagree on calling him "unbreakable," though. Just because what he's been through in-canon hasn't broken him doesn't mean nothing can. If anything, the fact that nothing has managed it yet makes me more fascinated with the idea.

Although, this has all been within a very short jaunt of time. When my dad passed, I was pretty numb and normal for about a month afterwards - still in denial - and then it hit me and I broke down. It's very possible that later on he could collapse for a bit, but all the same I can't see it changing him forever as much as being a hurdle for him to climb over.

...Well dang, I just made myself sad. Now if this timeskip does happen as planned I won't be able to unsee griefstriken!john during the gap. D:

i think i probably find it hot if i wasn't, but us homestuck fans tend to be weirdly overprotective of our babbies lol

Go read homestuck. Everybody else either loves or hates it, so you may as well take your crack.

Just understand... it's long. Really, really long and updates are generally several pages a day. you can read the first 50 pages and you haven't even read the first week of the comic yet.

If however, you get through the worldbuilding that is act 1 (which is all about the guy in op's picture), it really starts getting more compelling and the story proper starts happening. A secret recently talked about how it's a long read, and frankly it is. But most people who get through agree it was worth it, and the first part isn't actually bad, persay.

At any rate, if you do decide to go for it, and get to WV: Ascend, and your still not into it, it's probably just not for you. Odds are good by then though, you'll just keep reading.
