That is such a sad secret, OP. I haven't even seen that movie and I'm all teary-eyed. ;___;

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
As the owner of a few snakes (including a Boa Constrictor as the one in the movie) I have to say that snakes do not feel loneliness, their brain is remarkably primitive and although they have instincts, they don't "think" or act the slightest like mammals do.

No, they do not require company. Now, even if the snake were able to feel emotions, given the size of the enclosure shown in the movie and the fact that it would have had regularly food available, I very much doubt it'd be unhappy. Yes, the wild is big, but snakes spend much of their time hiding in tiny tiny holes and only moving to stalk their prey/self-regulating/whatnot.

Well, that makes me feel better about real snakes, at least, so thanks for that (seriously).

I still agree it was a moving moment in the film (and the book) though.

Thank you. I have corns and one ball python and the only time they get 'lonely' is when the corns wake up in the spring!

This so much. This part of the movie always annoyed me. I don't know if it was in the books but I assumed it was in there for later discussion about how Harry was a parcel mouth.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
But what if it's a magical snake?

Speculations aside, that's a cool thing to know about snakes. Thanks.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for all the info, I kind of expected a snake owner would speak up when my secret showed up. :) I don't own any snakes, only look at them sometimes at the pet store whenever I visit. ^^ My secret was not meant to imply anything negative about snake owners.

I understand what you mean about them not having any "feelings" of loneliness but as a few others have mentioned, the scene was shot to be emotional and sad and to tug at your heartstrings. Well, that's how it felt to me at least. To me personally, there's something so sad about the way the snake just moves its head to point at the sign, instead of saying something. Viewers can take different things from that or the sign alone.

Plus, when the Boa Constrictor leaves/escapes, it even says "Brazil, here I come... Thanksss, amigo!" to Harry, as if it always "desired" to go there. That's another reason why I feel about the scene the way I do. The snake is magical and can "talk", so I've humanized it in my mind and gave it human characteristics.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought so too :(

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I expended most of my emotional energy in that scene (book and movie) being irrationally angry about the snake blinking. No, just no.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
That bothered me too, but I see it this way: That is all from Harry's point of view; the magic of his Parseltongue not only allows him to talk to snakes, but also to understand them, and what better way to understand emotions and gestures then to perceive normal snakes movements -or no movements at all- as human-like gestures?

The snake didn't blink at all, but Harry's Parseltongue made his brain think it did, because the snake was trying to communicate agreement/"I understand you" to him.

Oh god yes. This. So much this. Without a doubt the most poignant scene in the book.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Does the fact that that snake is --Nagini-- make you see this secret differently, i wonder?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
You say it like it is a FACT when it actually is JUST A THEORY.
BTW, I don't believe there were the same snake at all.

Wait...

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Where the hell did you get that from? That's not in the books or movies as far as I can recall.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Incorrect. Nagini is a venomous snake, and the snake at the zoo was a boa constrictor.

Even if this were true, how in hell would that snake get to Albania, without being noticed. How The Hell.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Man, that SHOULD have been what happened.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Objection!
This was a rumour going around on tumblr and has never been confirmed. They're two different snakes.

No, because that snake is male, idiot.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
aww. It's true! It's a great moment, Harry and this random creature understanding each other.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That seen actually kind of annoyed me. If I were a sanke I'd much rather live in captivity. It's always warm, I get food regularily instead of hunting, and there is no chance of me being eaten alive. Or dead, really.

Wow, I never even made that connection between Harry and the snake! :O
