I have the exact opposite problem, in that every series I've enjoyed, I had to be in the fandom to enjoy it. It's led to me doing a lot of fandom-investigating and not picking up certain series, just because some fandoms scare me, or otherwise don't appeal. :(

In short, we all have weird fandom qualifications, I'm sure. :)

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been the same way! I tend to get into things that have fandoms, with exceptions. It took me FOREVER to actually watch Doctor Who because the fandom intimidated me.

[identity profile] miss-makiba.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I'm still not into Doctor Who for pretty much that reason. I need to work up the courage to dive in, I think. Or at least lurk. XD

[identity profile] aetter.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, OP. Despite being really into the fandom during the movie-high era, I never managed to read too much LOTR fic (or any Middle-earth based fic). I found some excellent stuff from time to time, but I didn't really crave it.

[identity profile] mjisinbflo.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
me too! i think it's because LOTR doesnt leave me wanting more. It's perfect in all it's ways. <3

ARE YOU ME?

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally found a lot of LOTR fanfic unsatisfying when I was more active in that fandom. Then again, the few things I wrote were pretty terrible, so...

[identity profile] zhyvae.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS SO MUCH.
After I saw the movies for the first time and before I started reading the books (which were a few weeks tops) I read a lot of slash fanfic, but after that... never again. Not even things that fandom generally holds in high regard, like the Mellon Chronicles. There's just something in Tolkien's writing that cannot be emulated by other writers, however skilled they may be.

[identity profile] adlanth.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I don't know. I've read and keep reading some amazing stuff in the fandom (well, Silmarillion rather than LotR, but still - Tolkien). Then again I realise there's a loooot of terrible things as well (Sturgeon's law etc.) and I understand the 'purist' impulse...

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that feeling.

I don't want to read any fanfic for LotR because I just love it so much as is and I can't think of anything that would be an improvement to it.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a fandom like this. There's nothing where I don't welcome good fic.

It's not that I don't sympathize but my mind just doesn't do that. People say that about Cowboy Bebop in particular -- I love it too much to want fic and there's no way the fic would be good enough -- but I love the fic too.

[identity profile] 0o0f.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't even fangirl over it because it's too, idk, sacred. It's a shame, since both the books and movies are so good.

[identity profile] shahrizai.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
OMG LotR fic. So I once tried this popular epic long Faramir/Eowyn fic, but then Faramir started beating Eowyn and she ran off with their kids to go hide with Aragorn and Arwen and I was like WHAT THE SHIT IS THIS 20th CENTURY MORALS IN *MY* LORD OF THE RINGS? Aragorn would have been like, wtf, you ran away from your husband and stole his children I'M SHIPPING YOU RIGHT BACK TO HIM NOW WOMAN.

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
something tells me that aragorn wouldn't hold with faramir beating on a princess of rohan, that sounds like a quick way to start a war. and faramir is way too decent for that shit. :/

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
dude, this is pretty much how i feel about LOTR. i veer way more to the academic end of the spectrum and i just. ugh. i can't enjoy any kind of slash fic (except MAYBE the occasional legolas/aragorn because lolol), especially where the hobbits are involved. it just gives me the creeps. and i love to read and write smutfic. LOTR IS JUST SACRED OKAY. :|

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel you on this. Like... LotR is dear to my heart and there was a time when I was on the verge of becoming way fannish about it, but in ways that didn't involve fic. (Studying Tolkien's conlangs, etc.) Not even because it'd feel disrespectful, more like... there are certain things fandom and fanfiction do really well, but they are not the things I want out of the LotR universe.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess I don't really read LotR fic either. Not sure why.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Two LotR secrets in one day!!

I'm the same way though. The canon is pretty satisfying and I don't really feel the burning desire to read fic like I do for other things (I also ship nothing, which helps, no doubt).

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing relevant I have to say is that my first ever encounter with fanfic was a LotR fic. One of my classmates was in our gym class proofreading a handwritten copy of a fic her cousin wrote; I remember being amazed that someone besides the author could continue a story.

Anyway, rock on with how you read, OP.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's really cute.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I love the series and I've never been able to read fic for the walkers, but your phrasing sounds really nasty to the people who could "taint" your perceptions.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
I usually only read fanfiction that fulfills a need that the source material lacks for me, like an unresolved relationship, so I never craved LOTR fic. I was so satisfied with the books and the movies.

[identity profile] rattyrayvn.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I know at least two people who feel the same way, so you are not alone OP :)

[identity profile] darnaguen.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, I'm pretty much the same. It's just... yeah, there's something untouchable about Tolkien's creations. Almost sacred.

Yeah, it's silly. I know.
