(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)So, the fact that plenty, hell most people I know manage to go without me ever seeing them crying in public means there lives are perfect, and never exposed to the same level of emotionally wretched experiences? That anyone who avoids breaking down is some sort of robotic husk, devoid of feelings?
Or perhaps, they just manage to have some emotional self control. A dying idea I know, but lets not pretend we're totally at the behest of some magical external force.
You say this like it's a choice. It's not. In most cases, it really, really isn't. When you're full-out crying in public, it's usually because however hard you try, you can't stop.
I don't think this is nearly as inherently true as you're pretending it is, and you're stripping away a great deal of autonomy and self control in doing so.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)Um, no. That's not the point I was addressing, at all. (By the way, just because you've never seen someone cry in front of someone else, doesn't mean they never have done, so I don't really see where you're trying to go with that argument. Especially since it has nothing to do with what I said.)
My point was this: you — or the anon you're agreeing with, you might not be the same person — were saying that crying in public = selfish, because those who do it don't take into account the feelings and reactions of the people around them, who might feel awkward/embarrassed about it. I was replying that caring only for your own feelings of awkwardness/embarrassment in a moment when someone is clearly hurt and distressed right in front of you is practically the definition of selfishness, and that you are being incredibly hypocritical in accusing them of something you are proving yourself to be.
Yes, most people have self-control in most situations, and can usually restrain themselves from crying in public. But not always. Sometimes emotions just get the better of you. That's what I was addressing with When you're full-out crying in public, it's usually because however hard you try, you can't stop: sometimes autonomy and self-control do shit for you.
And when it happens to you — general you, just so we're clear — I sure as hell hope that the person next to you isn't thinking of themselves in that moment, but of you.
