Because I HAVE told people it isn't my thing, and I've been met with "you didn't give it a fair shake" and "you just haven't found the right series for you yet."

Different isn't always shitty, no. But in the case of yaoi/BL, they are synonymous. The entire genre runs on offensive, lazy writing.
