Which part of Spain? I travel back and forth between Tenerife and Madrid, and after 10+ years I can definitely say American women get hit on a lot. I've even got one guy friend who constantly tries to hit on these girls with his piss-poor English. Mind you, most of the guys I see doing this are in their early twenties (and I'm not saying all guys this age act like that), so maybe it's just a very recent thing.
From what I've seen and heard, the harassing gets worse for American girls 'cause they don't know how to say back, and the guys don't care since (usually) they can't understand the words, even if they definitely understand the meaning behind them. And compared to people from other countries, Americans do get the worst of it because people have this consensus that Americans are arrogant and uncultured. So when an American girl finally fights back, she immediately becomes "free game" and deserves to be teased and harassed. I've seen this happen to local girls and girls from other countries, it's happened to me, but like I said, imho Americans get the worst of it.

Funny. That is not what...

A) The Peace Corps warned (in detail) about.
B) My Cuban, Colombian, and Argentinian Spanish professors warned me about (the Cuban did summer trips to Spain with the studens, the Colombian to Mexico. They also talked about their own cultures).
C) Most American women who travel/live abroad have said.

It varies by country, yes. But it isn't a matter of 'Oh, American women so hot!' but more 'Hey, on TV American women are easy!' and many times that is the majority of their info on us, depending on region, education level, and a couple other factors.

I'm just sayin'. From all the first and second hand accounts, it IS a thing. Maybe you should research before getting on your own conceited high horse?

Oh, and most of these women and people who talk about it will also detail all the amazing and wonderful people they have met, with the harassment being just something to deal with and be aware of.

But the OP's response is awesome. I am so stealing it for when I teach abroad.

Actually, when I lived in Europe I got more attention than the other non-American girls. I think being American had a lot to do with it.
