I went to Italy and Greece with my parents when I was sixteen. I didn't wear makeup and was in t-shirts and jeans during the trip, and I STILL got attention from men on the street. Like, even right in front of my fucking mom and dad. One guy in Rome even took me by the wrist to try and talk to me, actually seperating me from my parents for a few seconds until they realized I wasn't walking beside them anymore. I was too afraid to call out to them.

I've had opportunities to go to Italy since then (it's been over a decade), but the thought of dealing with that kind of stuff again makes me feel panicky. I will never go back.

I've only been in Italy, and Spain a couple days myself across my life, but in that tiny period the amount of just absolutely unacceptable behaviour I got exposed to was shocking.

Like the dictionary definition of rape culture.

When I was in Italy I got hit on by a thirty year old guy outside a cafe. I was a twelve year old on a Girl Guide holiday, with a bunch of other Guides. Not even a joke.
