So, OP, I sort of fail to see how holding yourself back in life is akin to a companion. Even Amy, who we know very little about in terms of her Earth life outside of Rory and that she was a kiss-o-gram girl, was working before the Doctor came into her life.
Instead, think of it as- the companions WENT for what they want, so don't hold yourself back. Pursue what you want out of life.
