The new commenting system on LJ sucks, I think we can all agree (and all the other prospective design changes seem to be speeding it down the path of no return). Knowing LJ, it's probably not going to change no matter how much anybody complains, and as this comm is heavily based on user comments, it's probably time to consider moving. Dreamwidth is the closest to LJ's old format and has a large fandom base, and seems the best alternative for now.

So -

[Poll #1804842]

Other thoughts?

(As a note, I'm completely willing to either stay or move. Updating the comm is easy enough for me either way.)

ETA - It's not only about subject lines. Others have written up potential problems better than I could:

http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=6261682#t6261682
ETA 4 - http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=7952050#t7952050

ETA 2 - For those worried about possibly needing to make DW accounts to comment, if a move happens: you don't need one! OpenID will let you comment as an LJ user (in the same way Facebook users can comment on LJ).

ETA 3 - For those worried about missing updates: I can crosspost to LJ to let you know a post is up, I don't mind that (it's like a minute of extra work, no problem) - if the DW move happens though, the comments would be over there.

ETA 5 - Apparently, this is what we're getting next year.

Changes?

I must be the only person in all of LJ whose commenting system hasn't changed. It still looks for me pretty much the way it has looked for the last year.

[identity profile] caersmane.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I would hate to lose FS but I won't be moving to DW, so please don't leave LJ

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it changed for me, but it just looks like aesthetic changes, not functional changes. So I'm pretty confused right now, especially since this is the first time I've been on LJ in a few days.

[identity profile] jurisimmortalis.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Scribbld is a good alternative.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I vote to wait until Saturday, then switch to Dreamwidth if necessary and mirror posts on LJ with commenting disabled. Or partial mirror with a link/fake cut to the DW post. I know I'm probably not the only one who has a Dreamwidth account in order to comment and read friends' locked posts, but doesn't check their DW flist regularly.

Same...in fact, the changes seem easier to be honest...I wasn't sure on how to have a photo or video in my comments but now I can.
I think this new aesthetic for comments is quite nice. I don't get what people are all pissed off about, to be honest...?

If you change your layout, you get your comment titles back.

[identity profile] synnerxx.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? There's no subject line for me and the icon drop down menu is gone. If you have a customized LJ layout on your journal/comm, it doesn't seem to be affected, but for those with LJ standard layouts, the subject line is gone and the icon drop down menu is too.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I knew it was bad, but I didn't really appreciate HOW bad until trying to write this comment just now. I can't vote, but for what it's worth: move. Now. Even if LJ fixes this crap, they cannot be trusted not to break it again in the future.

[identity profile] shannenb.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I see people commenting about not being able to put subjects, etc...but mine still looks like this:

So I don't see anything really different. It's always looked like that. The only thing I notice as missing (and it's probably been gone a while) is the part about logging in with Facebook or some other platform, which I never used anyway.

maybe it's cause you have a paid acoount?

[identity profile] thinkxpink.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate the new commenting system but I won't be moving from livejournal and I would hate to lose fandomsecrets so I voted no.

[identity profile] caz-kenobi.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather you stay here because I don't use my DW much at all, but then I only really read FS so the changes in comment posting don't bother me much at all

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have pics of the new commenting system because I'm not seeing any changes with mine yet?

[identity profile] clo-sama.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here...
And to be honest I don't think these changes are that big a deal, it's pretty much the same to me, we just need some time to adjust.

[identity profile] synnerxx.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly because the subject lines are gone and fandom relies on them for topics, trigger warnings, RP journals, etc.

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, yeah, the subject line seems to be gone, yes (I don't really use it so I didn't notice, ha!), but the icon drop down menu is still there - I just had to click on the little arrow under my default userpic.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you have any interest in playing around with the layout? It seems that if you change from the default layout you can get it to look pretty similar to what it was before - I really know nothing about how to do any of this stuff, but there's lots of talk of it here http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/25251.html?page=4#comments and some here http://spnanonhaven.livejournal.com/18819.html?thread=90452867#t90452867 and here http://xmen-firstkink.livejournal.com/7398.html#comments

[identity profile] ravewalker.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a paid account and it's changed for me.

Just a test

[identity profile] 1337nik.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a paid account and mine looks the same. I have a custom layout though

[identity profile] jadeleopard.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because you use custom comment pages.

[identity profile] fickletastictot.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Waiting until Saturday can give us more time to make accounts/get settled in at our site of choice. (My preference would be DW.)

[identity profile] aenrhien.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I say wait until Saturday, then move to either Dreamwidth or IJ and just mirror posts here or some such for the people who want to still see the secrets and don't want to move.

[identity profile] synnerxx.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the same though. It's not the scroll box and every icon has to load as a picture and, for some people with 100+ icons like me, it's a pain to load. Also it's not in alphabetical order anymore which bothers me.

ETA: Spelling.

Same. I like it, to be honest. It seems nice and simple. The lack of the subject line and "preview" option kinda pisses me off tho.
