I haven't read it in a while, but I didn't like the original guy who wrote it, except for wank purposes. He was kind of a douche. The current guy I remember as being pretty nice, but I haven't read this column for like three years so...yeah.

Well, it's ANN. Dissing scanlation/fansub communities is a popular pastime over there.

And then the staff goes and does season previews using fansubs, but that's all right, for some reason.

The anime industry has always had a weird relationship with fansubs that has involved a lot of cognitive dissonance. (For example a number of the actors will decry fansubs up and down, but then admit at con panels that they watch fansubs for a series in order to get into the character; also, of course, the fact that the whole industry essentially thrives on publicity and popularity in the fansub/scanlation circle)
They announce new shows they've acquired at cons and expect people to get all excited because...they've seen the fansubs, presumably, or otherwise why? Because they heard from the internet that it's popular in Japan?

I only use ANN for information (similar to IMDB except ANN has more of the information about industry people I'm looking for than IMDB does). The rest is total crap. There are plenty of blogs and other sites on the internet where people who know what the fuck they're talking about discuss anime.

Same here. It's a pretty instantaneous and trustworthy source of news, and it has pretty accurate cast lists for all of its shows, but that's all I use it for. I don't really like any of their original content.

I've given up taking any of ANN's columns seriously every since a "reviewer" openly admitted that they didn't actually watch something they were supposed to review, and then trashed it. Even if it wasn't a personal favorite anime of mine, I don't think that's the proper way to review something.

I'm disgusted at how they blatantly rip that picture off Howl's Moving Castle and didn't even try to hide it. This column used to be represented by the original picture of Howl. For some reason (didn't obtain proper rights, presumably), they suddenly switched over to the current pic, made by tracing over the same picture of Howl they removed. So on one hand, they're putting fansubs and scanlations down, on the other, they represent themselves using a trace of copyrighted material. I guess some people can't get enough from harassing abortion clinics during the day (the same ones their family trusts), so this is what they do at night.

I like some things on ANN, but the current Answerman is awful. Ever since one of his first columns where he agreed with some idiot claiming the usage of the German language, symbolism, etc is problematic because of WWII when they were just talking about things like, say, the fact that Rin Tohsaka's spells in Fate/Stay Night are in German as opposed to anything even relevant to WWII, I've kind of hated him. (I mean really what the fuck? It's ~problematic~ for anime to use anything related to Germany at all because...they were allies in WWII what?) And he hasn't given me any reason to change my mind yet. The way he's so damn condescending in answering every single question he gets is so fucking annoying.

I stopped reading that column long ago, for the same reasons. I'm glad I did. There's a remarkable number of douches both on the staff of the site and on the forums. Reading it can often be rage inducing, but it's essentially the best site for the latest info; so that's what I stick to.
