OP here

I hate the insinuation that, if I can't read LotR then I must not be very intelligent. No, it's because I have ADD and Tolkein's style just puts me straight to sleep. I really love to read, and I'd love to actually get into this series, if only to say that I did. My brain won't let me though. *sadpanda*

I doubt anyone would believe you must be stupid if you don't enjoy LOTR. And there's nothing about them to make those books "smart only". And if they say so, they're most likely trolling.
Tastes=/= intelligence.

Thanks for the comment. Of course it doesn't help my case when I misspell the author's name right there.

FWIW, I love those books and will defend them against charges of needing an editor to cut out the so-called digressions or tangents, but I don't think there's any excuse for insinuating that somebody must not be very intelligent because she or he doesn't like them. They're very odd books; they're not conventional novels; and plenty of very smart people are going to dislike them or find them unreadable. Taste, people are allowed to have it! There is nothing wrong with yours, OP, nothing at all, and I'll fight anyone who tells you there is.

I didn't know that was a common opinion. I came at it from the angle that a lot of English Lit types look down their noses at genre work, so why would LOTR be any different?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Late reply is late.

But the truth is that no literature teacher I ever had allowed us to read Tolkien for their classes, no matter how many people wanted to. Same with Stephen King.
Of course, I live in a non English-speaking country and those authors write in English, but we still had to read Orwell and Poe, anyway, thus that was not the reason.

By "notoriously dense," I mean "it's notoriously dense for everyone." I was a lit major, and I'm studying publishing now. I still couldn't get into the books. I'm not implying you're stupid at all. Sorry for the lack of clarity!

I have ADD and I inhaled LOTR.

You weren't trying hard enough, OP.
