I'd still not seen Testament until recently, to complete the "big three", because I'd heard it was the worst. Then I saw it and decided Threads was the winner for causing can't-sleep-nukes-will-get-me.

Eh, to me Testament glossed over the actual attack so much that it could have been the family responding to any sort of large-scale disaster, really. It was more of a movie about social breakdowns in crisis situations than specifically "OMG NUKES AHHHHH". It was kinda 'okay movie's been on for five minutes bring on the offscreen bombs so the mother can angst over her vaporized husband and how she just doesn't now how she'll survive without him for the rest of the film'.

That also happened in the book and film adaption of Shadow on the Hearth, a quite frankly nearly identical to Testament, but at least Shadow had the excuse of being written in 1950 for it's 'Oh noes, teh mens are gone, whatever shall we do!' sexism.

I think that's why Threads and The Day After have so much more impact. The emphasis is on the horror of the attack and what it does, not just putting it offscreen as a plot device.

*coughs* I think you can tell I geek out about this stuff too.

Woops, forgot to add the OP line to that. The above post is mine, of course.

I can't really comment, I'm spending the Christmas break making my way through a huge list of nuclear-related films (attacks, post-apoc, disaster etc) ;)

Yeah, I'd just heard so much about Testament being this huge emotional thing that would destroy me and when I finally saw it? Disappointment. Maybe the posters on the IDMB message board for it should have made the film, they told the story much better than the filmmakers did!

Am I the only one who's disappointed with films when the nuke doesn't go off and the day is saved just in time? Always feels like a letdown after all the tension! I will only make an exception for K-19: The Widowmaker for actually having a really touching ending.
