NieR is a sequel to Drakengard (based on the crack ending where they invade Tokyo) by the now-defunct Cavia games, published through Square Enix at roughly the same time as Square's post-apocalyptic epic fantasy, Final Fantasy XIII. Naturally it didn't recieve any publicity. Gameplay was interesting in some places and... less so in others, the graphics were PS2 quality in a PS3 game, the story was grimdark piled on top of schadenfreude, and the soundtrack was fantastic.
Grimoire Nier is an official expansion book that was only available in Japan, explaining the details and the connection to Drakengard. Western fans did a fan-translaton that can be found online.
