I remember a very similar secret being posted a while back, so at least you're not alone. I do it too, and I noticed that after posting several comments (spaced apart by a decent amount of time), other people began to comment on the prompt too and the prompts I've done it with have gotten filled. I can't say for sure there's an actual correlation or if it's just coincidence, but it can't hurt I guess. Maybe when a potential filler sees a lot of comments seconding a prompt, they feel more confident that it will get a lot of readers and feedback if they post a story.

I think your last sentence is right on the money. Also, a lot of people track memes, so several people seconding the same prompt means that prompt winds up in their inbox more than once. Maybe the first time they see it, they get an inkling of an idea, but forget about it later. Then another "second" means the idea creeps back a bit more forcefully. And then every time another "second" arrives, they're writing a little more in their head, until they actually open a Word doc to get the damn thing out of their brain! (Speaking from experience.)
