I bet he was a great cook, too. imagine the spreads he'd put out for you guys to nosh on while he read to you.

I was lucky enough to see him in person, and... Well, for whatever it might be worth, he certainly seemed like a great man. He was enthusiastic, cheerful, and funny, and he showed a great deal of appreciation to all the fans who were present. Definitely someone worth admiring.

I've had his Mossflower audiobook on cassette since only forever. But when I tried listening to it again recently, I couldn't really get through any of it without tearing up. Which isn't conducive when you want listen to it on the daily commute without drawing attention to yourself.

I feel you, OP.

When Marlfox was released in the states, he did a book tour. I went with my mom; I think I was 8 or 9, and completely obsessed with his books. He did a reading and some silly magic tricks for all the kids there, and when I got a chance to shake his hand and have him sign my book, it was great, because he was so kind and nice.

I hope it helps OP to know that Mr Jacques was every bit as kind as you'd imagine him to be.

Oh, I hadn't heard he'd passed away! I loved those books growing up. I met him once at an autograph signing and he was lovely. He complimented my name. :)

Just reading this secret makes me sad. I'm still trying to accept his sudden passing. He and his books have made such an impact on my life, and I will always regret not getting the chance to see him in person. Somehow I think he's in his beloved Redwall Abbey. But remember what he said at the end of Rakkety Tam: you can visit the Abbey anytime in your imagination.

OP

Oh, that's so beautiful. Thank you so much for that, it makes me feel a lot less sad. Yes, that's what I like to think, he's sitting in the Abbey drinking burdock cordial and Abbey cake, talking with the Abbot and fishing with the otters. <3

You are most welcome :)

whoa, for a second when I saw the picture I thought it was Patrick Stewart and I was about to flip the hell out

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Whew, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought this!

He came to my hometown when I was 10 or 11 and was just the nicest, most amazingly approachable and funny gent ever. I remember that the bookshop was absolutely packed, and that he read us the first chapter or so of Redwall, complete with voices. He also tried to teach us (a bunch of Southern Americans) how to pronounce 'author' with a British accent. It was hysterical. I still have the copy of Mossflower he signed somewhere at my parents' house.

I'd love to get a copy of some of the books on tape. I think I know what I'm going to spend my Christmas check on... :)

When I was in 8th grade, I went to get one of my Redwall books signed by him at our local indy bookstore. Brian was WONDERFUL. He read out loud, and answered EVERYONE'S questions, and when asked about mole-speech, answered the question IN mole-speech.
It was a really special afternoon :)
