I've always believed her soul was absorbed into Illyria, not destroyed. Otherwise, I'd probably be just as messed up about it as you are.

I subscribe to this theory. I tend to think that, since there was a hope of bringing her back in Season 6, it would have been revealed as this later on, and that the show ended before there was an opportunity to say as much. But if Illyria had access to enough of Fred to be able to mimic her thoughts, her attitudes, her beliefs, I genuinely believe that something of her lived on in Illyria, regardless of what Illyria said or believed.

I also agree with this theory hence the reason why Illyria appeared as Fred for her parents. She didn't want them to feel sad because of Fred's soul and Fred's love.

Exactly. I think they believed that her soul had been destroyed, sure, but the truth was that it was sort of lying dormant within her. I have to believe that because otherwise it hurts too much to think about it.

I always imagined that they merged in some way-- hence why Illyria seemed so curious of Fred's interests and relationships. It's totally reasonable.

Yeah, this is really the only thing that makes sense to me since she I doubt she would have wanted to "try out" a relationship with Wesley or cry when he died. Joss had it planned that her soul wasn't destroyed for the sixth season, but seeing as it never aired...fucking studio suits. Anyway in the comics it appears that they went back to "soul destroyed" but some of her actions, even before Illyria got memories of Fred dumped in her head, still reek of the humanity that Illyria always considered itself above. So yeah, I'll go with absorbed or fused or whatever. I think this means that her soul can never be released from Illyria but I'll take that over "completely destroyed" any day of the week.
