Well, I know when I was a little kid my favourite character tended to be the female character in most things, just because "GIRL POWER" and whatever (and frankly in retrospect that usually left me a choice between one or maybe two characters as compared to the half-dozen male characters). But beyond that I think even once you hit adulthood there's this assumption that while a woman is expected to relate to both men and women, a man can only be expected to relate to another man.

It brings to mind the whole fuckery over Disney's Tangled. The name got changed because OMG NO BOYS WILL EVER WANT TO WATCH RAPUNZEL! QUICK! PIMP THE HELL OUT OF THE MANLY MALE LEAD!

Or we could just let children know that it's okay to like both male and female characters regardless of sex/gender.

Well, to be fair I finally watched it and enjoyed it (I love Zach Levi's voice too much.) and thought it was cute, but the entire time I kept thinking that there wasn't a need for the whole marketing fail that Disney implemented.

I'm tentatively excited for "Brave" to come out. So far there's been no hint of a love interest for the heroine, so hopefully it stays that way and we can have a movie with a kick-ass heroine without the need for someone with a penis to validate her.

I thought Tangled was okay but I hate everything about how they marketed it, lol, and I think I hate even more that it made so much money because it absolutely validated all of their marketing choices and blah.

IKR! I'm really really hoping Brave is good. A whole trailer with nary a love interest in sight was exciting! Speaking of, I saw Sherlock Holmes 2 last night and was pretty impressed that the lead female had not a hint of a romantic subplot at any point. She was still very secondary to Holmes and Watson, but NOT EVEN UST WITH EITHER OF THEM? OH MY STARS!

I honestly loved Sherlock Holmes 2. (I found it infinitely better than the first SH and so much prettier.)

I KNOW, RIGHT? I WAS SO HAPPY! (Not about the whole secondary thing, but still.) I liked her a lot!

I'm hoping that Brave is going to be spectacular.

I liked it more than the first one too! I actually understood the villain's motivations this time and by the end of the movie I wasn't left going "wait, what?" I mean, I only saw the first one once and it was ages ago so maybe I just don't remember, but I remember being vaguely confused the whole time.

THIS! SH1's audio was so low for me that it was hard to hear and concentrate.

But everything in SH2 I really liked. And I ESPECIALLY loved Watson's wife and the part she eventually got to play.

Even Brave is getting some hate at the moment though, seeing as it took Pixar TWELVE movies until they made one with a female lead. Which is kind of shameful. And at the same time, while their other lead characters are kind of 'everyman' guys who do good - their first female lead is a princess who wants moooore other than her royal life (never heard that one before).

I'm still looking forward to it though. Like you say, there seems to be no hint of a love interest thus far. Also, unlike Disney movies were the focus is more on the father, this seems to be more on her relationship with her mother which is also a nice change.

It's not ideal, I agree. But hopefully it will be enough of a commercial success that it will encourage more female-lead oriented Pixar movies. *Lives In Hope*

It IS a nice change! I'm just hoping the mother doesn't end up completely vilified.

Oh totally, it's pathetic that it took Pixar so long, and it's a bit disappointing that it's another princess trope, but I'll take the princess movie over nothing.

Apparently the story is very focused on the mother/daughter relationship, which sounds great! Here's hoping they haven't messed it up.

I can understand their point, but man, I really love rebellious princesses and that premise *will* make me more likely to go out of my way to see it.

I know, I know. I have no defense for myself.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding the desire for an "everywoman" character. I mean, I like rebellious princesses a lot and it's far from the worst character trope, but it would be so cool to see an everyman-type female character become a hero (rather than just have a romance, which tends to be the extent of the story for most female characters of this type.)

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The best example I could think of in another animated movie would probably be Mulan. She is just an everyday girl with no status other than the daughter of an elderly soldier. She's not interested in finding a man but at the same time she's not against marriage or anything as she's willing to go through with it to honour her tradition etc. She's probably the closest to the typical Pixar protagonists who go from Joe Blogs to Hero of the World over a film.
