(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 04:55 am (UTC)(link)Marius is a lovestruck schoolboy who becomes town up at the possibility of being separated from Cosette, to the point of pretty much suicidally joining his friends at the barricade. And yet, they gave him a very strong voice, instead of someone who would tone it down and... Sound like a schoolboy who wasn't in charge of the revolution.
Had Michael Ball been Enjolras, I think I would have liked him much better. As it was, though, he wasn't a good fit for Marius with how strongly he sang the part and how, well... Less passionate he felt in some parts, where it felt he was more singing it than believing it. (His Empty Chairs at Empty Tables was one of the more obvious ones.)
It's a tad ironic, but Nick's lack of breath control and nervousness worked out better for him, because he projected about the right persona--the meek and lovestruck schoolboy ruled by his emotions. He sounded broken up and like he was going to sob at any moment during ECaET, as opposed to Ball who was far too strong for someone who had just watched all of their friends die and had almost died themselves. The song is a lament. Michael Ball... just didn't pull off the lamentation part.
