The farther on the autistic spectrum a person is, the less likely it is they are actually entitled, self-absorbed, selfish, etc., in any socially meaningful sense, and the more likely is it that they are just plain unaware of other people's reactions.

An entitled shithead knows he's pissing you off and thinks he has a right to because [insert whatever self-justification here]. A severely autistic person genuinely has no fucking idea that there's any problem until you seemingly explode out of nowhere and frighten the everloving shit out of him.

tl;dr think woobie, not jackass.

Mildly autistic people exist, however.

Even there, it's not the autism that's making them an entitled asshole. It's the part of them that is socially aware and doesn't care that is doing it.

Because that's what an asshole is: someone who is a dick on purpose.

If anything, the stereotype for autism should be the clueless, quirky, sometimes fragile person who is content to do whatever their thing is, even if it looks strange to others. They will argue with logic (though perhaps not taking all factors in account), not entitlement, because that's their tool for understanding the world.

NAYRT

I'm gonna admit that I used to be one of those people who equated "autistic" with "asshole" (and I'm a psychology major, shame on me =___=), but this comment along with your other comment have definitely put things in a different perspective that makes so much more sense. Thank you for that, seriously.

I know this and I definitely believe that when most autistic people do something that seems rude or say something inappropriate, they aren't doing it on purpose and would probably be horrified to find out they were hurting people's feelings or making them uncomfortable. However, I do think that autistic people can be as entitled, self-absorbed, and selfish as anyone else. Autism doesn't cause these traits, but it doesn't prevent them, either.

This.

I was a summer camp counselor a few years back, and we had a girl in our cabin who had been professionally diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. I think you just described her to a "T". She didn't understand why her wanting to work on her craft project while the rest of the cabin was at riflery was something that could inconvenience anyone--she just wanted to finish her project, and didn't want to waste time with meaningless tasks.
