Well, everyone loves the Brig too, and in New Who Jack and Rory are both very popular. The girls might win out because of number and longevity but I'm not sure I'd say DW fandom gives female characters a lot of respect on the whole.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sarah Jane? ACE? WTF?! Leela and her Janus thorns? Romana?!

Oh and look how the Brig was treated by Three. And I don't like Jack very much or Rory. Oh does ADRIC? Get respect? Or Harry where everyone is like: LOL CLAM!
Turlough? He's my favorite mainly because he's SO interesting... Because he's so twisted! Also to me he's a twink.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what you mean...? Are you saying Ace/Sarah Jane/etc are or aren't respected by the fans themselves? I don't know much about the politics of Classic Who fandom because I don't have much involvement there, but all of the New Who ladies get plenty of hate for various reasons including several sexist ones, which is what I meant when I said that DW as a fandom doesn't necessarily treat its female characters with utmost respect.

In regards to the men I primarily meant that there are fewer of them so they're more likely to be less popular.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's not true of the fourteen male companions and UNIT guys that had big roles on Doctor who through out it's history. Only four have been widely popular. Adric has a huge hatedom.

Of course your only thinking of New Who and I'm counting New and Classic Who.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, all I'm trying to say is that many parts of Doctor Who fandom have some very sexist attitudes regarding the female companions. Whether or not the male companions are popular does not really tie into this because in that case it's not related to sexism.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the whole world is sexist we can't help but take inside of us. And some women do get mad at the girls fro being there. And I thought you were originally going on about the Male companions were more popular then the female.

And I have never seen the sexism much, well not in regards to old who.

Look you might even call me sexist the way I feel about most the female companions in New Who. I liked Donna, Wilf and Adelaide. But that's because I don't think Rose, Amy, Rory were well drawn. And Jack, he was cool to start with but then got less so, also John Barrowman looks far to much like a Ken Doll which sickens me. I think like Rory, Mickey was kind of a stock character so was Jackie.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about what goes on in the Classic Who side of fandom, to my outsider perspective it all seems pretty happy although I'm sure if the internet had been around when it was airing the fandom would've been just as wanky as the New Who fandom is today.

New Who fandom uses a lot of sexist rhetoric to explain why they don't like [insert companion here]. I know everyone has personal taste and not everyone is going to like the same characters. But things like Rose being "clingy", River being "smug", Donna being "shrill", Martha being "whiny", Amy being a "slut", I would qualify those as sexist statements rather than good (or not problematic) reasons to dislike a character.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well I don't Rose, Martha and Rose because they all seem to the same character a 'feisty' young woman

Donna was interesting and got my sympathy.

And yeah they are sexist.

You don't hear those things in the OLD who so much.

Why aren't you in the Old who fandom, it's fun! The old show is great! So much more creepy, atmospheric, dark and layered then the new one. And Oohhh curse of Fernic. And the Tomb of Cybermen. OR the light hearted romp that is City of Death which was written by Douglas Adams.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think Martha, Rose and Amy have pretty distinct personalities from each other, though I do think Amy's is sort of closest to the feisty redhead trope. But I don't really care so much until people get into sexist justifications for hating a character.

I'm not in Classic fandom so much because I haven't seen much of it and haven't particularly enjoyed what I have seen. It's alright, it's just not really my pace or style -- the serial format doesn't work very well for me. It does seem like the Classic fandom is a happy little niche mostly without wank amongst itself, though there are the periodic Classic-vs-New clashes.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
You have to take Classic who in bits I've found. But that's me. I've said this before and I'll say it again, I don't get how anyone can be active in the who fandom with out seeing ONE whole half of the show they profess to love by choice not because of lack access or time. To me it would like reading only HALF the bible.

Personally, I don't think you can make a good contribution to the fandom or have an informed opinion if don't watch both.

Heck someone told me in another thread the Doctor doesn't kill anyone... I had to correct them as he has.

To me Old who should be like wine keep watching until you get the taste for it. Then come back to the fandom.

This has gotten me into trouble. I have friend who can't watch the old series either and I don't grudge her. But she's NOT in fandom and that is what bugs me.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, stylistically New Who and Classic Who are very different, so it makes sense to me that someone might like one and not the other, just as it makes sense to me that someone might like RTD-era stuff and not Moffat-era stuff or vice versa. The show itself plays fast and loose with continuity, so I don't think Classic Who is really required watching to follow and enjoy New Who, and obviously New Who isn't required watching to follow or enjoy Classic Who.

I've tried watching Classic Who. My general aim is to see a story per Doctor, and so far I'm just missing Six and Seven. I've even listened to one of Eight's audios. But I'm just not that into any of it, so it's unlikely I'm going to sit down and spend hours catching up on the things I haven't seen. I wouldn't expect anyone to feel obligated to watch something they're not enjoying just because they enjoyed another part of it. If they only like Moffat's writing, so be it. If they only like Classic Who, so be it. If they only like the newer stuff, that's up to them. I would say I'm pretty familiar with Classic Who, via a mixture of watching things and reading up on it, but of course I'm not as well versed in it as someone who has seen it all. I don't think that means I can't have opinions on New Who as an entity.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Man that's.. okay I'm trying to be nice here, I am trying to be nice here..... I really am... but you can't take Doctor who and break it up in chunks and pick and choose. Love the whole thing and try to watch all the surviving episodes or don't call yourself a whovian, and don't be in the fandom. If you want to talk about the show, it's canon and mythology learn the whole thing hell read a wiki.
That argument you made, makes me kinda sick.

Time and Rani, had the Rani in it. I loved the Rani before but I hated that episode.

Heck I like Deadpool comicbooks, but I haven't read all of them and since I haven't I don't do anything in that fandom.

I like Blake's 7 but as I'm episode four of season one I'm NOT in that fandom either.

To me a person should only be in the fandom community when they have seen the whole work (or much of it as out or around). If not then lurk or don't be in fandom.

Seven I'd say Curse of Fenric. Six well Vengeance on Varos or The Two Doctors.

Also this my bias but with expect for one or two drooling fanboy. I've found the Classic who fandom seems to be smarter or maybe I've seen one to many: "I LUV TEN-INCH's (HEE-HEE) HAIR and BUTT!" and "OMG! BARROWMAN!" Post

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeahhhhhh... sorry, but I'm gonna continue being in fandom and writing meta and fic and calling myself a fan regardless.

It's not like I'm going to write a long meta post about Harry based on a paragraph I read on Wikipedia, or a fic about Zoe without having seen any of her serials. But I'm perfectly qualified to talk about Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy, River, Jackie, Bad Wolf -- anything in the New Who umbrella, because I've seen it, I know it, I've engaged with it on a fan level. I don't need to know absolutely anything form Classic Who to know how I feel about Rose's relationship with Jackie. Those things aren't related at all. The only time this argument sort-of applies is when you come to the Doctor himself, since he's the only constant on the show, and even then, New Who was designed via Time War so that new viewers could leap right in without much or any knowledge of the Classic stuff.

There are lots of TV shows I like but I'm not in the fandom for because I don't have that level of interest in the text. I think that being in fandom does require a base knowledge of the canon. But there are many kinds of canon in Doctor Who, and there are many subsets of fandom. There are people who have only seen Eleven's seasons. Does it bother me, as a fan of the stuff that came before? Sure, I think they're missing out. But that doesn't mean they're unqualified to talk about Amy Pond, because they've seen all there is to see about Amy Pond.

I know lots of smart people who prefer or have primarily only seen New Who. I'm sure there are smart people in Classic Who fandom as well. Someone being attracted to an actor or actress doesn't preclude them being intelligent.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm kinda sick of New Who blather as well. And the cult of Tennant. I love all who but everyone seems to FORGET classic who or dismiss it and it annoys me.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
It sucks that you're into a part of the show that doesn't get talked about as much as the newer stuff. I get that -- I don't like Moffat's era so much, but if you go on a site like Tumblr there's like 3 Amy gifs for every gif of Rose or Martha or Donna.

But it's not really anyone's fault that they happened to get into the show at a particular time and have a preference for it. I'm too young to have grown up with Classic Who, and I'm sure that's part of why the style is so foreign to me. Of course the stuff that's airing on TV right now is going to be quite popular in comparison to the stuff from twenty, thirty, forty years ago. It sucks if that's where your interest lies, but that's just the nature of how it's going to work. Considering the age of some of the Classic material I think its presence online and in fandom is pretty impressive.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
I got into classic who as an adult, I did see some it as a kid but always freaked me out and I ddn't understand it at all.

[identity profile] tardiscrash.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
wow, what show are you watching, yeah the new stuff is his an miss but Ace blowing up Daleks, girls like Liz and Nyssa being a competent and respected sciences, Leela leading the way knife first and saving the Doctors ass. Romana can run circles around the Doctor academically. All the girls have wonderful bad ass moments.

They guys are always the but of the joke in Doctor who.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-24 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I'm talking about the fandom, not the show, so the girls having badass moments doesn't apply. I'm talking about the fact that people don't like Rose for being "clingy", Amy because she's a "slut", Martha because she's "whiny", River because she's "smug", Donna because she's "shrill", etc.

[identity profile] tardiscrash.livejournal.com 2011-12-24 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom will find a way to hate everyone. Seriously, especially new who fandom.

And honestly they are never a good read on what most normal viewers are taking away form a show or what they want from it.

Most people I met in real life who like Doctor Who don't have any strong feelings about the companions, or they just think Rose was sweet and/or River is a bad ass, or whatever. Or they just want to talk about Daleks.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-12-25 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I'm talking about the fandom specifically. I know the general viewing audience is different from the hardcore fans.
