As a die-hard feminist who HATES Twilight - Meyer did a decent job portraying depression. Depression isn't anti-feminist but shaming it is.

The anon up there was pretty clearly disputing your claim that "Meyer did a decent job portraying depression" by pointing out the fact that she romanticized depression, meaning that, no, she didn't do a decent job portraying it. I think their reading comprehension is fine.

My depression is/was rather similar to one Meyer portrayed? I'm not saying that the followup was good (that "Edward's back! I'm better now all it takes it true love" bullshit) but the symptoms she wrote were not too horrible.

No one is saying there weren't elements of truth to the way the depression was portrayed, but, rather, that because it was romanticized by Meyer it was a poor portrayal of depression.

But Meyer wasn't trying to portray depression. She romanticized depressive symptoms as the signs of true love. I wouldn't say that's an accurate portrayal — or if it is it's a purely accidental one.

Um, okay? You just said "I hate everything about Twilight" but "Meyer did a decent job of portraying depression." No, she didn't. She romanticized it, Bella just ~got over it~, etc etc. And anyway, no one's shaming depression here in this meme. They're criticizing how Bella was written -- which was as a weak girl who can't survive unless she has a man around to love her. And hell, even THAT would be okay, if the book wasn't actually written to portray this scenario as being GOOD and IDEAL.

Except she wasn't trying to portray actual clinical depression. If that was her focus, she botched it horribly by having it be over an emotionally abusive guy and never drawing any sort of attention to it. If it wasn't her focus, it's still romanticizing it in a really sick way.

I'm surprised that you say that. I found Bella's depression to be very different than mine. Obviously, everyone experiences depression differently, but I find that have depression is so painful I could never romanticize it the way Bella does. Her depression didn't ring true for me at all.
