I'm going to semi-agree. While I agree with everyone else that Bella's break-up was horribly written, the way the original meme was worded does seem a bit misogynous. Taking out of the series' context, the meme does seem to say "WOMEN ARE WEAK IF THEY GET DEPRESSED AFTER A BREAK UP AND DON'T DO ANYTHING BADASS LOL"

I feel basically the same way. I never read twilight so fuck if I know all the details about how it was handled. That's why it came off as both kinda misogynistic and shaming of mental illness. "If you dont react strongly you are reacting wrong" and honestly, as much as I agree with the people who are making the points that it has deeper meaning about the source material.... Well. I saw the meme posted on IMGUR. IMGUR has a lot of horribly sexist members, and I somehow doubt they have the deep understanding of "the author's depicts Bella's reaction as the only correct one for True Love and that is awful and misogynistic" and more "haha women are bitches and need to stop getting sad. Dumb bitches are dumb!"

Therein lies the issue. How are OTHER people reading it? People without context? People who didn't read all those books? In a way it reminds me of why rape jokes are bad. If you make a rape joke, there might be someone who hears it who thinks everyone rapes, and reaffirms his or her feelings on the subject. If someone who HATES people who have ANY emotional reaction to anything reads this, it looks like they're saying that being depressed is bad and no good person is ever depressed.

tl;dr: I think OP and most of the commenters are all right.

tl;dr: I think OP and most of the commenters are all right.

But most of the commenters disagree.

And, by the logic you have comparing this to rape jokes (a comparison with which I STRONGLY disagree), no one should criticize any literature/entertainment in an open forum for fear that their criticism would be taken out of context by someone who hasn't read/seen it.

Any evaluation of books includes evaluations of specific characters. In this case, the meme took off because so many women do find Bella's portrayal offensive.
