I heard a rumor that the character designer for Etrian Odyssey made some statement about how male and female characters in RPGs don't "look" male and female enough anymore (particularly that the men look too feminine), and how he went out of his way to design the characters to look as respectively feminine and masculine as possible. If that's true, it kind of negates any love I could ever have for his character designs.

Really?! :O Not only is that incredibly sexist, but if that was his goal, he failed miserably. I struggled to determine the genders of several of his characters and even gave some names of the "incorrect" gender before my sole EO gaming buddy laughed at me and pointed out that, for every job class, the two male avatars are always presented before the two female ones when you're creating characters.

For example, this is a man. I thought he was a female in her late teens/early 20s, so I named him "Geena":
