Actually, it IS about celebrating female characters who have lives of their own outside of their men. Who make hard choices and do awesome things independently from them. Who work through their pain and come back stronger. If Twilight was just a shitty set of books out there, that would be one thing, but the problem is that it's incredibly popular with young teenagers (and for some reason adult women) who read that a creepy, controlling, predatory, ~but sparkling~ douchebag is some sort of romantic ideal AND THEY BELIEVE IT (I know not ALL Twifans love Edward and want that kind of relationship. But a whole lot do); and the message of Bella's actions in New Moon is THIS IS TOTALLY NORMAL WHEN YOU ARE IN ~TRUE LOVE~ AND WHEN HE COMES BACK YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE FINE BECAUSE HE IS ALL YOU NEED. I would argue that this kind of discussion is worth having

I've been depressed. I've been suicidal. If I thought you were right and that Bella was being shamed for having legitimate mental health issues, then I wouldn't be happy about it. But I don't - in fact, I think I have grounds to be annoyed that something which is really not awesome is presented as, like...a side-effect of their PURE AND PERFECT LOVE. These kinds of comparisons aren't talking about People Who Don't Have Trouble With Depression vs People Who Do, they're talking about Strong Characters & Romances & Writing vs Shitty Characters & Romances & Writing.
