CFUD is just too big to keep up with, most of the time, otherwise I'd be interested. Island people are more elitist than CFUD ever was... at least CFUD members don't openly mock other players and/or applications.

Despite the knee-jerk defensive reactions from those in the RP, there are cliques and in-jokes and malicious sniping directed at those who just don't seem to "fit in."

It's the same for any large community, really. It's not just CFUD or Island. It's just how things are. The more people are in a community, the less likely it is that everyone's going to like each other, and then drama sets in.

I don't deny that it happens (and I know I've done my fair share of it.) But I wish people would stop acting like it's exclusive to CFUD/Island.

Different anon

It's not, but that's where it's more visible.

Seems so! It's kind of an eye-opener, really.

Same Anonymouse

This is a good point. However, I have been in other large RP groups in which there is not nearly the problem that Island has. Sadly, the problem is centered around a few individuals who seem to be able to get away with anything.

I enjoyed CFUD and its players the short time I was there, though that's been quite some time ago now.

Can't say anything for Island either way since I'm not part of it and I've never really lurked.

But I will say ♥!

(Anonymous) 2007-07-05 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
and I wish people would stop acting like it doesn't happen on CFUD/Island.

[identity profile] mcjunyi.livejournal.com 2007-07-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't. I thought I said pretty clearly that it did... and that it does in any large community, to some degree.

It's the general attitude of "It's a CFUD thing" or "It's an Island thing" that tends to bother me. It happens everywhere; not just in these two RPs.

What RP doesn't have in-jokes? It's a pretty common thing for places to gain a sizable amount of them once they have a solid player base and have been around for a while. CFUD has a wiki too, where certain in-jokes are explained as well. Island had one for a while too, but it's currently down, so.

Can't deny there isn't mocking of people either, but that happens everywhere, as already said. It's pretty much impossible to expect everyone to fit in and blend perfectly.

(Anonymous) 2007-07-04 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
In-jokes are well and good, as long as new people even have a chance to be involved, rather than intimidated.

And no, you can't expect everyone to fit in "perfectly." So you should mock them out of your little group? How... mature.
tehkev: (Anise - Well whatever.)

[personal profile] tehkev 2007-07-04 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
If someone is actually intimidated by the in-jokes, they should ask about them and their meaning? You don't really need to get them either to enjoy the RP. I don't even get some of them, yet I still have fun. If they really want to get involved, they should... y'know, do it? It's not hard to go around and reply to a few people, in-jokes or not.

I can only think of only one case where the category 'mocking out of' applies, and that really wasn't shoving out, as much as them leaving because they themselves were fed up with a few people? It was a largely in part them leaving all on their own due to personal reasons and feelings toward certain players, not people 'mocking them out'.

And again, I will stress, there is mocking, I'm not trying to deny that. But not everyone in the two said RP's is a vicious wolf trying to tear out your internet jugular at any given and throw it to the pack of hounds.

*squeak squeak*

(Anonymous) 2007-07-04 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
I do happen to know of that particular case... and the person in question I believe was fed up with not only her own mocking, but that of her friends as well. But that's only second-hand hearsay and old wank, not worth dragging up. And I'd rather not bug her with it again.

As I said in an above comment, it's not everyone. It's a few specific people. Unfortunately, many of the otherwise pleasant players feel like they have to follow their example.

I'm also mostly referring to Island, not CFUD... I quite enjoyed CFUD in my short time there a loooong time ago.

Yeah, it was a group thing, lots of people at once and all that. But it's water under the bridge, let's leave it alone and not disturb the ogre who lives down there feeding on that kinda stuff.

Heh. It's kinda like a bandwagon in a way, people see them doing it and they all jump on and join in. People really like trends, y'know? Even if they are trends that focus on mocking somebody. I've taken part in that before myself, but I never actually would maliciously harass someone about it on a personal level unless they themselves were stirring it up. (And even then, I would only do it a bit, not so badly as to go hunt them down and harass them at every turn) But I can't speak for the entire place. It just gets kinda annoying seeing everyone getting pushed into one group like we're all evil 24/7. Communities like this are sort of an exception though, since writing a secret like that is just inviting harassment. (Same with BRPS and so on, if you go around saying people suck, they in turn tend to answer in the same manner.)

And I figured it was mostly Island, but the secret in question is lumping both places together, so I kind of just mentioned them both in passing. I like both myself, given I play at both. Though I admittedly am horribly inactive at CFUD and should work on that, but yeah. I think my point(did I even have one in there?) is made regarding that.

Heh. Always kinda fun talking civilly(?!) to an anon.

The bad thing about trends like this is, those that don't jump in, or heaven forbid, actually protest this behavior, are put in the "uncool kids" corner, so to speak. Everyone becomes afraid of speaking up in defense of those being mocked, for fear of being lumped in with them and turned upon themselves. So the unfortunate cycle continues.

And heh, I see no point in being uncivil.
