Okay, does anyone want to spoil me for Downton Abbey season two? Because I watched season one and wasn't all that keen on it, but thought maybe I'd watch season two when it aired on PBS, but now everyone who loved season one seems to hate season two, and I'm not sure whether I should just give up on it all or whether paradoxically I'll like season two.

I still really loved series 2. Just go into it with the knowledge that time passes super fast and there are some soap opera type plots, and hopefully you'll be able to enjoy it.

An important addendum to the speed of time passing is that the years flip by while the plot does not, so you get Mary waffling on agreeing to an engagement for several years (and thus the guy also waiting in a stalled-out non-relationship all that time, too), and Sibyl and Branson having the exact same conversation about their relationship for years, and so on. There's, like, a year's worth of plot, and it's stretched to cover 4 or 5 years (eta: in order to get WW1 out of the way in one season), and character development that would otherwise just be soapy but normal enough is utterly, unrealistically stagnant.

(The Christmas special was back on track, I thought, though.)

Hah, that sounds annoying. But so long as it's not Tudors-style "It's 1914! No, it's 1918! Now it's 1916! Just kidding, we're back in 1914, but only until we can go to 1915!" leapfrogging between years and events, I think I can deal.

Yeah, I personally thought season two fell a little flat, as well. There were also too many season 2 only characters like Ethel and Jane that I just didn't care about because I hadn't grown to love them over the first series. :|a
I personally really enjoyed the Christmas Special though! Not sure what OP thought, but for me, it made up for some of the disappointment in season two. :X

err, anyone point me in the direction of series 2? ...I've been looking, but can't find it. I know it premieres on American tv in like a week, but I CAN'T WAIT. I just ate up the first series in a couple days, ordered the dvds, and have been rewatching it, but I gotta know what happens next!

I thought the Christmas special was PERFECTION. The writing seemed much tighter and the conflict was more interpersonal that the soap opera tendencies of series 2.

I loved the Christmas special so much, I ugly cried everywhere.

As a viewer whose priorities are Mary, Matthew and whether or not they are touching each other's stuff, I was immensely satisfied with the developments in the special.

Season 2 was really disappointing, with way too many "WTF?" moments, but the Christmas special was pretty good. There was one really big "WTF?" moment, but I don't think you'll lose the will to live after watching it, OP.

I personally live near and know Lord Fellowes, and keep considering collecting up all the Fandom Secrets about Downton Abbey and showing them to him. xD

Although I know much of the fandom would be horrified if I did this. I think he'd be amused.

(FWIW, he and his wife are lovely, down-to-earth people.)
