Isn't Monk supposed to be Jewish in the show, though?

[identity profile] schizophrenic0.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Is he? I don't remember that.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but that isn't really relevant.

Well, if it's all "represent my nationality in Hollywood," having the producers decide to have him impersonate another nationality hints that Hollywood isn't as advanced as we'd like it to be yet. But hey, baby steps, every little bit of progress helps, I suppose.

after your first comment, But hey, baby steps, every little bit of progress helps, I suppose. comes across as ridiculously condescending, js.

Condescending to whom? Hollywood?

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think the OP's point was that he as a Lebanese man would be able to get roles other than the stereotypical ones they typically assign to his race. It didn't sound like it mattered if the role was representative of the nation or not.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't really matter. The fact that Tony Shalhoub is a Lebanese man playing 'heroic' roles in Hollywood (regardless of whether his characters are Lebanese or not) is a step-up from the usual stereotypical roles Lebanese actors have to play.

True.

There are Lebanese Jews, you know. (And after the wars of the '50s and '70s, a lot of them ended up in the US.)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? Being Jewish is a religion, not an ethnicity. It's possible to be Lebanese and Jewish as it's possible to be anything and Jewish since you can convert to Judaism; you can't convert to being Lebanese (although I suppose you can probably go there there and become a citizen--you're still not going to be of Lebanese descent though w/the facial features/skin color).

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I meant ethnic Jewish, not religious Jewish. I could be wrong about it being in the show, though, so I'm not gonna debate it much.

I don't recall them establishing his ethnicity at all.

You know, it might have been a fanfiction thingy.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think it might have. I've seen Monk and I'd probably remember if the character was supposed to be Jewish. (I'll admit I missed a lot of the show though, but still... I'm pretty sure on this.)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Does being a pedantic tool get you off or something?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously.

[identity profile] cysfics.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
So? There are Jewish Lebanese people.

[identity profile] you-speak-lies.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen every episode and never got that impression. He always celebrated Christmas, anyway, without any mention of it being because of Trudy or anything like that. He was described once as "white" by a group of skinheads in prison but that was the only mention of race I can remember. I think he was just supposed to be "ambiguous." His father was played by a Jewish actor whose family came from Syria, his brother was played by an Italian and his mother was played by someone at least part-Lebanese.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention some Jews do participate in the secular Christmas festivities even though they don't celebrate the holiday religiously. I come from an interfaith marriage -- Catholic mom, Jewish dad -- in which neither spouse converted. My father and his entire side of the family celebrates Christmas with everyone else in the gifting and decorating aspect. And my mom, siblings, and myself celebrate Passover and Rosh Hashanah even though the rest of us were raised Catholic.

I did a bit of research, and it turns out that it was just a fanfic I read a few years ago with him having the whole traditional New York Jewish family, which I somehow remembered as being canon. My bad.
