I cannot tell if AYRT is giving advice vaguely along the lines of "the best revenge is living well" or whether they actually did directly retaliate in some form.

Personally I've never really gotten revenge on anybody so I don't know how it would feel, but I agree with you that a little schadenfreude is somewhat different and probably better-feeling than actual serious retribution. Fantasies and feelings are different than the consequences of real actions.
