Ah, is it? That's interesting to know.

Doesn't change the fact that OP's point is bullshit though. A woman doing a masculine thing doesn't somehow make her less complex of a character - if a character isn't complicated or well-written, they should be criticized on that, not criticized for such off-the-wall shit as possessing a vagina while smoking, as if that act alone makes them a bad character.

You're missing the bit where after she did get the reference it changed nothing.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Don't delete it.

No, seriously, don't. I don't care if you think it's the worst goddamn thing you've ever made and are ashamed to be associated with it. Don't delete it. At one point, you thought it was worth presenting to the public. Therefore, the responsibility of having created it falls on your shoulder, for better or worse.

And think of it this way: If something you think is mediocre gets tons of hits, imagine what'll happen when you create something truly outstanding.

Babies are born with blue eyes so that wouldn't work.

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
James Albus is fine but then you'd have Sirius Severus.

Seconding Fumi Yoshinaga, she is the queen of josei! I'd recommend Antique Bakery and Ooku from her. Some other good series are Pet Shop of Horrors, Wild Adapter, xxxHolic.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard of Nana and Paradise Kiss before, but I've never checked them out. I must rectify this! Kaze Hikaru sounds really interesting, too.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, my old friend from high school loved Pet Shop of Horrors! I have got to check that one out. And I can't believe that I've never heard of Fumi Yoshinaga before...

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
You've got to remember that Ginny was naming pets and people don't name pets the same way they do people. I mean, I don't see any kids around named "Scruffy" but there are plenty of dogs. So we can't really use her pet naming taste as a basis for her baby naming taste.

I'm not particularly fond of the names myself, I've thought of some alternative middle names that would have evened things out a little bit. (Not saying these are any better, mind)

James Arthur, Albus Sirius and Lily Molly

I don't know what I would have gone for if I were JK though. If they'd just been random names like Phil, Mark and Anna it would have felt a little lacking, I think, so names that meant something to the readers would be important. Since the books are in Harry's POV, it ended up being a little biased in that direction.

I think JK did a good job with the rest of the 2nd gen though.

xxxHolic is seinen. I second Fumi Yoshinaga so much; Ooku is awesome.

No one curr about het ships

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
lol I like how you want your fandom to have as little internalized misogyny as possible but you read shoujo XD

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... maybe not so much that the entire Pokeverse is on the autistic spectrum, but you could argue that someone who is is definitely in a position to excel. Like you mentioned in the comments - the specialisations make it very easy for someone to develop a very narrow focus on something and excel in it. And to really be good at Pokemon battles, you have to remember movesets, type interactions, what every single move does, stats, natures, items, EVs and IVs...

Even other areas need to have focus and an extremely good head for details. Contests - remembering what moves affect what attribute, poffins, accessories, et cetera. Breeding - remembering egg groups, egg moves, natures...

So I'm not sure about everyone being autistic, but I can certainly buy it being a world where autistics could excel. And honestly, since Satoshi Tajiri does have Asperger's, that's not too far off.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh damn I thought it was Emily Deschanel. *headdesk*

[identity profile] amph87.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Wow you should calm down OP.

On a related note though I find it a little sad/ironic how just about ALL of the blonde icons in music or Hollywood (Marilyn, Madonna, Britney etc) are actually brunettes. In fact I can't even remember the last time I saw a celebrity with naturally blonde hair. Nordic genes aren't that rare, yo

My original theory was that River was Rose's daughter. IDK where I got this but I think I read a fanfic on Teaspoon? If anyone knows what I'm talking about please link me because I have searched so long and hard for it to no avail.

Come to /co/.

[identity profile] frostoria.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of my favourite josei have been said already, so I'm gonna rec an obscure one: Mars no Kiss. It's vaguely shoujo-ai and contains het sex scenes, but the emotions and storytelling is very well-done. Made me want to start reading josei again.

George's kid was named Fred. It'd be kind of weird to have two Freds in the family. And TBH, weird names don't seem all that unusual in the HP-verse. Like Scorpius and Mundungus.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
SO MUCH YES. Even if I found them a tad oversensitive, I totally respected their right to decide to have a comm where there are strict rules about language some people find sexist or homophobic. Comics fandom is disgustingly misogynistic, and if comic book fans, especially female ones, want a safe space, they are more than entitled to it. In fact, I gleefully welcome it.

But in my opinion? Their ridiculous views about how you're allowed to talk about female characters IS disgustingly misogynistic. They behave like female characters cannot be treated the same as male characters, because they are sooooooo fragile and weak and delicate that if you make a joke about violence or death that would be PERFECTLY fine with a male character, you will completely traumatize all female users and utterly demolish the female character in question because she is obviously a worthless piece of fluff with no value as a character and who cannot survive a single joke. And when she's a widely-hated character, is she judged on her worth as a character? Nooooooo! She's judged on her gender. You can't insult a female character. No matter what a jackass she is, no matter what an annoying, worthless, boring character she is, no matter if you'd be ripping her to pieces and making hilarious hate-memes about her if she was male. Of course not! A woman should be judged only on her gender, not her personality, amirite?

*headdesk, headdesk, headdesk*

But it's perfectly fine to have long conversations and cracky hypotheticals about how you'd like to castrate and sodomize a male character for being a bit irritating. Yeah, that's perfectly fine. (I've literally seen conversations exactly like this there).

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly it is still the only place where I can discuss comic books and not get told to go back to the kitchen even in jest.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Part of me wants to agree with you, but another part of me just gets really irritated and automatically dislikes certain archetypes for female characters for reasons I can't quite explain. (Not the stereotypical tough chick one, but the sweet and kind one, generally.) Seeing the same stereotypical image of femininity over an over again has always made me feel angry, like the show is saying "this is a real woman and you should be like this", no matter how well-developed she is, and I end up hating her because I hate the archetype and the pressure to be that way. It's not the "possessing a vagina" thing, it's the re-enforcement of a societal ideal I've always felt I fail to live up to. I don't feel that way about real women, obviously, since real women aren't that simple. It's just media representations (especially if they're written by men. I can let it slide easier if women wrote it).

...so I sympathize with the OP.

That is a very interesting observation, given the holiday exchange fic I wrote--for a seinen series--does that very thing. I had noticed a plot hole about the main character's emotions and ended up writing fic to fill it.

I am now very amused at myself. ^^

mte. this is a pretty dumb argument. nothing against anyone on the autism spectrum, it's just... those are the mechanics of the game, and someone is cleeeeeeearly reading too much into it.
