also, the point of the secret was that scans_daily used to be really great

if it always sucked nobody would care

I certainly enjoyed s_d as it was back then, but it was not some magical wonderful place where nothing ever went wrong.

IMO people are idealizing the past far too much.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
it wasn't perfect, but it's worse now

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
you seriously think the place that ran gail simone out is better?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
yes, i know you can still talk to gail simone elsewhere

but the s_d where you could talk to her was a funner place, and the way she was treated was really embarassing

It was members, and one mod-hat-less mod, who engaged with Gail in that instance. On duty mods eventually got involved when the rules were being broken, but how is it the mods' fault that members of the community hated that story? idgi were the mods supposed to be like, "GUYS GAIL IS NICE, STOP BEING SO ~HYSTERICAL ABOUT THIS!"

The comm is modded for isms and posting infractions, not niceness.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, i loved how only gail and the people who defended her got in trouble. the whole "it's okay to be a total asshole if you're 'calling someone out' rule" you guys have there is great.

and i said she got run out of the comm. where did i say only the mods were responsible?

[identity profile] parsimonia.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
where did i say only the mods were responsible?

goal post moving, lol

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
what, not another animated gif?

[identity profile] parsimonia.livejournal.com 2012-01-04 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes you are undeserving.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2012-01-04 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a retired mod, dude, and I was on vacay when the Gail thing went down, so I can't comment on the situation in detail, sorry. But the rules are the rules, and they weren't changed to suit members or mods in that situation. They weren't designed to victimize or punish anyone, either.

Speaking only for myself, I'm absolutely aware that the current rule structure makes the comm uncomfortable for some people. During my tenure we tried several different rule structures, and different modding styles, and they all had their good and bad points. The biggest criticism I see these days is that the comm is overmodded. I don't hang out there enough to judge, but that's really easy to slide into when you're modding a comm that gets trolled so often.

idk, have you ever talked to the current mods about your concerns?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2012-01-04 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
btw I'm not suggesting that just talking to the mods will make sd a magical fairyland for you, but ime people don't talk to mods. We had to work really hard to get people to talk to us. And this was the case from the very first day I started as mod, before we started changing the rules.

[identity profile] parsimonia.livejournal.com 2012-01-04 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
but ime people don't talk to mods

This is very true.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-04 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Anytime someone calls the mods out they get their threads frozen and then they're either warned or banned.

Example of the someone calling out the mods on something and not getting their thread frozen or getting warned or banned.

Perhaps the people who do get frozen/warned/banned are so for a specific reason having to do with the way they express their criticism.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2012-01-04 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't spend much time on the comm these days, but I do see mods talking things over with people in the comments. There does come a point where threads that devolve into concern trolling have to be frozen though.

Do you have any examples?
