This is Spuffy, right? I ship them, even though I'm not in the fandom much. I'd heard that a lot of people like to excuse Spike's actions which doesn't sit well with me, so I'm glad to hear that that hasn't been your experience.

In my experience, people are soooo defensive of the assault scene. I usually see people saying that Spike shouldn't be held accountable for it (or anything else he did) because he didn't have a soul. Maybe it's better on other places; I'm mostly familiar with the fandom as it exists on Tumblr.

I've only seen that from casual fans, not the actual fandom. And I've been in Spuffy fandom on Tumblr for years.

I'm talking about the ones on Tumblr who aren't in fandom, but they'll on rare occasion reblog BtVS posts. As far as fans who are actually involved in fandom go, I don't think I've ever seen one excuse Spike's behavior.

There are a lot of misconceptions about Spuffy fandom, and all conversations seem to come back to this one, but it's really just a misconception. I've seen people read the first few lines of a meta about SR, see that the person is seeking to understand it, and reblog angrily, without reading the rest [condemning Spike]. People just assume that fandom forgives Spike, when instead fandom has learned to deal with the episode in other ways. It doesn't mean it's not a problematic ship, it just means that there are other aspects of it that people find appealing.

I follow(ed) several blogs that post primarily or exclusively Angel/BtVS content, but I unfollowed the ones posting things about Seeing Red that I really wasn't comfortable with, so I don't have any ~proof~ :/ sorry

do you have any recommendations for people who post thoughtfully about spuffy?

I'd definitely recommend this discussion of Seeing Red and a realistic take on its issues (http://nurfherder.tumblr.com/post/6976534732/25-day-spike-buffy-challenge-day-eighteen-least), and the blogger, too. Some other thoughtful Spuffy shippers are sleepwakehope, effulgentcolors, actuallyitsaidpratty, angearia, readytobestrong, queenofattolia, wouldbeheavenly had some stuff recently, itsa-wonder, sponsoredbyavampire, lesliecrusher, hannahroboto has some great meta... there are many, many others that don't come to mind right now, too. I know that most of these people have discussed Seeing Red in the past, but they haven't tagged those posts, so I haven't been able to find most of of them, sorry!

I'm new to BtVS and have become a shameless Spuffy fan. Unfortunately I'm a little lost as to where the best Spuffy community is located, one where I can get decent fic recs (ones that are actually faithful to Spike and Buffy's personalities without turning them into doting airheads who are gushily in wuv with each other)

Can someone point me in a good direction?

The seasonal_spuffy comm at LJ/DW has a lot of good quality fics, or you could check out the recs in this post: http://het-reccers.livejournal.com/228681.html#cutid2 which are all really excellent ones. I hope you find some fics you like, because while there are a lot of annoying ones, there are tons of fantastic fic too.
