I think they're supposed to be themselves and not their characters, which is why Lea and Jenna aren't dressed horribly, and Kevin is standing, even though Rachel, Tina, and Artie are different.

I agree 100000%. I stopped watching the show midway through S2 but then I started finding all this amazing fic, and now I only watch the show so I understand the context of whatever the fans write. Glee is the only show I watch where in my opinion, fanon > canon.
