As to the actual secret, I had a similar experience growing up. I have a half-sister who is 11 years older than me. I didn't even know she existed until she came to live with us one summer. (She grew up in Florida and my family was in California.) She was sixteen and I was like five, so I knew she existed before I was 13, but it was really weird. She ended up only staying the summer and I basically lost contact with her for years until I was about 16. Then it was just a bit weird and awkward that this almost 30 year old woman wanted a relationship with me. (This was the dawn of internet, so we didn't email or anything, and phone calls were weird and awkward and expensive.) I'm happy to say now that I'm 30 and she's in her 40s, though, we've managed to grow somewhat closer. She still lives very far away, but Facebook and email and Skype, etc has really let us keep in contact in a way we never could before. It'll never be like having grown up together, but there is definitely a sense of family there now.

And good for you, OP, for trying to make a relationship with your half-sister.
I can understand in a way the choice of your family... it can't have been easy for them, and if she and her mother were in a different country anyway, that was, sadly, probably easier to just ignore them completely.

But it's nice of you to overlook it and try to make it what you feel is right.

I had a friend who went through this OP. But when she went to Australia this summer past she stayed with her and all too. It's kind of unusual to think about it though. There was this person you could have known for a long time. Here's hoping you have some great times with your sis now though!

And while this isn't precisely the same:

It was only I think for 15 months but my family also hid a family member too- my cousin had a kid out of wedlock when I was in my teens- and my mother had no idea she was a great-aunt for a good while, telling my sister and I a few months later after she found out (so basically hid for as long as they knew the kid was on the way...). Apparently the whole wedlock thing was the reason they didn't tell, and my mother and father didn't want us to get 'ideas'. Needless to say, both my sister and I were not impressed (pretty pissed actually) they'd kept this from us, especially in the admitted 'reasons' they did so. We may have been teens but I was actually 17 then and my sister 16 when they told us, I think we'd run into the idea that -gasp- people don't always have sex when they're MARRIED a couple of years before that thank-you. I may have been naive as a kid, but not THAT naive.

Still he's a fun kid of 8 now (and he has a little brother now after they both got married when the hidden kid turned 3- said little brother now being 3 himself- and he's adorable with his brother in all honesty).Thinking back it was ridiculous my uncle didn't tell his sister and didn't want his son to say anything- and even more ridiculous what mum and dad thought as to why they kept it from us two specifically a few more months, but eh, all we can do is look to the future I guess.

I'm going through the same thing, anon! Except my half-sister lives in the same state as me, and I didn't find out until I was twenty. :\ But it's nice to know I'm not alone!
