What's so disgusting about it? Do you just hate Islam or something?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like a glorification of female veil, which I do find disgusting - just as much as I find the objectification of female body disgusting. Both objectify female body in a sexist manner.

But what if it's her choice to wear it?

Out of curiosity, what do you think about housewives? Or, say, fashion magazines?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Fashion magazones do not have a legal force behind them enforcing the values they are trying to establish.

As for housewifes, if a woman chooses to be one, given that she does have a choice (career opportunities as well as free choice of career itself), then more power to her. However, this condition is not given in a lot of cultures.

A veil, as well as the entire lifestyle it stands for, has a legal and societal power enforcing it in several countries. A woman can only have a choice in a secular country and in a secular culture. I have no problem with this. If she "chooses" to wear it in a non-secular, pro-veil culture, then it may not likely be her choice at all, but a choice not to be discrimated or persecuted or disowned by her family.

DA

I actually have some relatives who are Muslims, and they don't really mind if the women don't wear veils, it's more to do with the extremists and those who are in control of their society (the men). Every religion has its extremists, and I do agree no woman should ever be forced or pressured into wearing the veil, ever, but I don't think the veil itself is the problem.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that the veil in itself is not the problem, and that not all Muslims are like that. However, Islam has proven to be incompatible with secularization - which is a problem, and which also means that as long as it is the case, the veil will have a background of oppression in countres which enforce Sharia law.
That such countries exist, in the first place, is the problem.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Uuuh but in this case, it's this character's choice to wear it, right? -_-

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Funny, how my reply to this thread just disappeared.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, technophile, fuck you for this kind of censorship. At least make some kind of announcement that you are going to screen comments you disagree with, you cowardly fuck.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
dickishness begets dickishness

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Is it actually screened? Or did you accidentally hit 'expand' on a different comment while typing up your comment? There's enough shit going on with the new layout and settings that to assume that Tech is sensoring you is just silly.

Yeah, I've had to hit the refresh button several times for one of my comments to show up properly.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's a problem with LJ's cache system that hides comments.
