I saw this movie for the first time a few days ago, and it disturbed me not only because of how abusive the mother is, but because of how realistic she is. And how fucked up Rapunzel is because of it. Whether Gothel had some spark of affection for Rapunzel or no, the guilt and self-loathing that she makes her "daughter" feel is just horrible. And all I could think of while watching was that I know people like this.

I watched the movie while I was babysitting my sister's five year old daughter, who told me that her mother doesn't like the parts of the movie with Mother Gothel in them, and now I know why. They are difficult to watch because the scenario is so familiar. The amount of people who post on here saying that their own mothers were like this is testimony enough to that.
