I wish I could remember the movie better because I'm pretty sure this was my impression.
Would have been nice if he would have apologized to her, considering he basically fired her for being attractive.

My headcanon (because i adore this movie) is that he explained everything once they were 'outed' as being together. I love her running and jumping on him at the airport in her bright red coat, so very *not* the typical staid 'wife' of a public figure. She's just awesome.

Well, he didn't fire her, exactly. He just arranged for them not to have contact. If he'd fired her he would have been such a jerk that she would have been crazy for still liking him! But yeah, she probably thought he had her working out of his sight because she'd done something wrong when it never crossed his mind that she had.

Yes, my 'fired or what-have-you' assessment is because it seems more like he had her transferred elsewhere, rather than fired. But it's not stated definitely one way or the other. I don't think he'd put her out of a job for loving her.

Ah, I see. I assumed that "redistribute her" was much more of a euphemism than it was, I guess.
