I'd like to see examples of this. I mean, people keep saying these things, but I've never seen it actually happen. Where are all the male characters like Nina who are supposedly so loved?

There's also the fact that Rolo, a male character with a lot of slashy subtext with Lelouch is pretty much universally hated in the fandom.

So I'm starting to wonder; is the claim that a female character would be loved if she was male (but nothing else changed) really true? If so, where are the examples?

He's not universally hated, but I get the impression he's more hated than not. He has tons of fans but I usually see more hate than love for Rolo.
But he has way more fans than Nina. So maybe OP kind of has a point but it's not the kind of 180 turn they present it as?

Snape, Draco, Muraki, that guy in American Horror History. There are characters that have done worse things and they still get love. I'm not saying you have to love her, I don't. But the vitrol she gets? Off the charts.

Rolo is a good example, but the hate he gets is nowhere near the hate this girl gets. I've seen people defend Rolo more than once. I've never seen people defend her.

And you want a perfect example of a character that was loved when fandom thought it was male, but received a lot of backslash when it was revealed it was female? Check Fruits Basket.
