I saw this secret and got all excited, but your reasoning is different than mine. I don't like it when people ship the same pairings I do, because they inevitably characterize them in a way that is more widely accepted but that I don't agree with. I'd rather be shipping alone than have people tell me I'm doing it wrong, when I feel it's just the opposite.

But being lumped in with the fans that give fandom a bad name also sucks, and I get it, OP.

I feel exactly the same way about some pairings I like. I just don't get why people feel the need to change the characters involved for the sake of a pairing. For me, I feel like the canon material provides the chemistry and subtext, and fandom expands on it in a way we don't get a chance to see in-canon.

With pairings that aren't canon, at any rate.

Exactly! I mean, I ship a lot of things (femslash, dudeslash, and het alike) but so often, it's like people are trying to make a pairing mould and fit everyone into it, which completely ignores the unique aspects of shipping two characters rather than two other characters. It's enough to make a someone a lurker, you know.

All of my ships have the "two screwed up peas in one fucked up pod" aspect, and in only one -- ONE! -- does the prevailing fanon recognize that these are two very screwed-up people who would not have a typical anything in their relationship.

All the rest? It's like reading a romcom with the characters' faces in it and-- GRRR. Finding good fic/meta is like searching for a needle in an opium den.

Yes this. It's predictable, but I hate it when the very reasons that make a pairing unique and interesting to me are stripped away in order to make them fit into an overdone cliche, and the very few instances where they are treated IC and are interesting tend to get ignored.

Don't they ever get bored of shipping practically the same pairing over and over or what.

The secret a few posts down? But can't agree with you. This is a pretty generic secret, it could be about all sorts of things. And in fact is probably about more then one.

I'd be interested in op telling us exactly what the ships are though.

Now all I can picture are a group of speedsters dressed like the Flash trying to beat everyone else to the punch to shout, "I SHIP IT." Like, before I can even raise a finger at some awesome subtext scene where characters have the BEST chemistry, some asshole rapid shipper shoves me aside to ship it faster than me.

I've never been bashful about admitting I love problematic pairings. Viva la drama! Though I admit, I tend to give up and wander away from fandoms that are too uptight about such things. Thankfully I've been able to find a couple that are more than welcoming.
