I feel this way exactly. He's a bit of jerk canon-wise (if a well-meaning jerk) and not at all the sweet, bumbly, adorable troll he is in fanon. I like the fanon much better.

i guess i'm wondering how he is a "jerk" because i don't love him but i never thought of him that way

is it because of how he treated jade? i mean he shot her granddad and all that but he was trying to protect her. and it was definitely a bad idea for him to hit on her but he's just a kid and he's confused and desperate and...

idk, he's not my favorite and i actually kind of agree with this secret, but i don't really think he's a "jerk" in any way. but maybe there's something i'm forgetting about.

Pretty much. "I just shot your granddad, lemme hit on you" is a completely different attitude than what fanon makes him out to be. Heck, most fanon versions would have Tavros cringing at the idea of shooting a guy even if it was in defense of a newfound friend. I dunno, it's more the way he talks to the humans? I mean, I like Tavros, but his canon personality rubs me the wrong way.

i viewed that more as cultural difference kind of thing. like, tavros is a really sweet kid, especially for a troll, but he's still from alternia and from what we've seen people can be pretty cavalier about the whole death thing.

i will agree that fanon tavros is different, though.

To be fair, consider how often one's circle of friends would have people who honestly considered themselves your friends (and vice versa) yet they are still taking to somebody who crippled you, another one of your friends, and (by most's perception) nearly killed a third.

Lucky OP. I've yet to find a fanon portrayal of Tavros that I've liked. And honestly, I feel like he had a lot more going for him in-canon than he's given credit for: he's far too permissive and so unassertive he can't even make a decision for himself without getting the go-ahead from someone else. When he finally DOES take a stand, it kills him.

I'd love to see some expansion on that part of his character, given that most of his friends are either on one end of the scale or another, while he's just so terribly neutral about everything.

I get why people find it annoying and why people don't like him, but I dunno, I always thought he was fascinating for his short-comings.

Tavros annoyed me at first because of how accurate his portrayal of low self-esteem was. That'll get me crap probably, but frankly not everyone who lacks self-confidence is an adorable tolerable woobie. I ended up liking him because of that; because he just never got what having confidence was really about, and he never really listened when others tried to explain it to him(or at least, he listened and then twisted it around).

Fandom tends to make him a predictable woobie, and I find that more annoying actually. I have seen a few fics where Tavros gets a rather realistic character development, and grows a backbone while still remaining IC. I really liked those, but they're not too common. :(

It's Dave/Tavros, so it may not be your thing(though I don't like the pairing and I still loved the fic). But it's literally like, this one and two others I've seen that don't have him acting the way you described. Though I don't look too hard anymore since I don't expect good results. :\
