It actually kinda did the opposite for me. I was irritated. I mean, this is apparently a 'thing' now, where the subtext between two men is laid on so thick that it's practically impossible not to see it - but god forebid they ACTUALLY end up a couple, because then even the homophobes would have to notice and we can't have them not buying tickets and complaining. It just... it feels hypocritical to me. Like, they want to seem progressive, but not actually go the whole way. Have their cake and eat it too.

Agreed.

I hate that Guy Ritchie just slammed down that much ballsy homoeroticism in Sherlock Holmes, and yet the first time I mention it in casual conversation, someone will tell me that I'm crazy. Because why shouldn't I be crazy? Why shouldn't I be reading too much into things? As long as homosexuality exists only on the periphery of mainstream stories, and is only presented in "acceptable" overt ways, it will continue to reinforce the celluloid closet. It will continue to reinforce among the ignorant the idea that homosexuality isn't something that applies to them or what/who they love.

Totally agreed with both of you, anons. (And you said it all much more articulately than I managed to.)

Is this quoting something? It's excellent.

Seriously, this.

I didn't even get the "sweet" vibe that the OP seemed to be getting. To me it seemed like Guy Richie was deliberately toying with the audience to see how far he could take the gay subtext without putting off audiences. The first movie had Holmes upset about Watson's marriage and whether or not Watson would hang out with him anymore...but it also had sexual tension between Holmes and Irene Adler.

Irene Adler was received negatively by audiences so she got the boot. But the relationship between Holmes and Watson was received positively so that got amped up. Now they're ballroom dancing together, lying together almost naked (while Holmes wears makeup), Holmes refers to their friendship as a "relationship", Holmes is brokenhearted during Watson's wedding, and so on. I wouldn't be surprised if the next movie had a mistaken kiss in it or something to that effect.
